JOHXSOS'. •* • ■ II . 4 p R E F A C E. H AVING been frequently applied to for De- figns of various Kinds, which have fortunately met with Approbation (not only from Thofe for whom they were particularly intended, but from feveral other diftinguifhed Judges) I began to confider that this Species of Invention would be of greater Emolument if pre- fented to the Public in a more extenfive Manner; in Confequence of which, by the Advice, and pro- mifed Encouragement of many Artifts, I determined to publifh the following Sheets j alluring myfelf of their being infpe&ed with Candour by the JVorthy and Impartial } whofe good Opinion I fhall ever be ftudious to preferve. Tho’ thefe Defigns were meant as Alfiftants to young Artifts, yet I hope I fhall not incur the Cenfure of any fuperior Genius, by declaring them K i preface. them of Ufe to All: And when honoured by the Hand of the fkillful Workman, that lhall think proper to put them in Execution, I flatter myfelf they will give entire Satisfaction. Every Work offered to the World, for Utility or Amufement, is fure to labour under the Rod of Criticifm : Critics are generally a Set of People whofe foie Merit confifts in tracing out trivial Errors ; and as Mr. Pope obferves, -’7 were a Sin to rob them of their Mite. but certainly ’tis Prefumption in them to be confident that their Determination ought to be a Criterion for the Judgment of Others : All Men vary in Opinion, and a Fault in the Eye of One may be a Beauty in that of Another. ’Tis a Duty incumbent on an Author to endeavour at pleafing every Tafte ; and tho’ none ever yet arrived at Perfection, yet it is very evident there can be no furer Road to it. I am not in the leaft diffi¬ dent PREFACE, dent of my own Deficiencies ; but can plainly perceive many Defers in this Offspring of my Fancy ; yet, at the fame Time, flatter myfelf they are fuch as Thofe who are capable of amending will not deem of Confequence enough to depreciate the Whole : The Regard or Cenfure of the Otherwife Sort I am not at all follicitous about : Long may their Judgment tickle their Vanity by difcovering the Mifplacing of a Raffle , or fomefuch Trifle! while, like the Dog in the- Fable, barking at the Shadow, the Principal, the main Dejign , eludes their Attainment. I have taken the utmofl Care to fix the Plan for compleating this Work in as ufeful a Manner as poflible 5 and my Intention for publifhing it in Monthly Numbers, is for the better accommodating the Price to the Circumftances of every Purchafer. My Reafon for delivering the- Numbers in unconnected Pages refults from the Regard I {hall preferve, that no Number diminifh in Point of Merit from the preceding One j which could not be fo well anfwered for, were I to begin with Page i, and go on regular. To REF To conclude. The Defigns in this Colleftion, tho’ upwards of 150, may be all performed by a Mafter of his Art : This I again alfert with greater Confidence, as I am well fatisfied they can be executed by Myfelf.
