UNITED STATES STORE CARDS EDGAR H. ADAMS PUBLISHED BY Edgar H. Adams and Wayte Raymond NEW YORK 1920 ! 1 TCT NEW VORK C^TY UNITED STATES STORE CARDS A List of Merchants’ Advertising Checks, Restaurant Checks, and Kindred Pieces Issued from 1789 up to Recent Years, Including Many of the Tokens Which Passed as Money and Known as Hard Times Tokens BY EDGAR H. ADAMS NEW YORK, 1920 r- i Introduction In ))rc])ai'iiii»' this list of store cards, &.c., the coui])iler has he(‘ii i>ui(led by no jjaiticnlar rule, hut has listed together with reg'ular advertising; cards other items which have for many years been ))o])nlar with collectors of series of this kind. The collec- tion of store cards and kindred objects was much more in favor many years ago, with such well-known ami indefatigahh' col- lectors as d. X. T. Levi(*k, Menjanrin Pxdts, Klliott Woodward, (diaries Morris, Dr. B. P. Wri.giit and oth(‘rs. The collection of Mr. Levick, which was sold in 1884, was at that time by far the most complete, and today the catalogue ot that sale is invaluable as a guide to the colh'ctors. Mr. Betts’ collection was also a very notewoi’thy one, and was particularly nunarkable tor the series of New York store cards, although it also contained many rare and desiralile pieces b(donging to other localities. i\lr. Betts’ collection was sold in 1908, and the catalogue furnishes, with its interesting historical notes and plates, anothei- very necessary guide' to collectors. Mr. Woodward’s c(dh'ction was dis])osed of in 1884 and contained a very complete s(‘ries. The collection of Dr. Wright has been sold at various intervals, and ranks with the Levick collection for complete'iiess. Dr. Wright })robably has given the suliject more attention than any one else, and wrote a list of the piece's in his ce)llectie)n, which was ))ub- lisheel in the N^umismatist in 1900 and 1901. A very inte'resting anel ce)in])lete' list e>f the ste>re carels e>f New Veei'k was ])ublislu'el in The (’e)in Collectors’ Journal in 1885, 188(5 anel 1887. This same list was reprinteel by the Xe'w Ye>rk Xumismatic Club in 191J. In 1907 F. (J. DutHeld e>f Baltime)i'e, prepareel a very com- prehensive list e)f ste)re carels anel kinelreel items e>f Maiylanel for the Xumismatist. There are other sales of ste)re carels which ai'c impe)rtant, such as that held by (leei. A. Leavitt & (^o., e>f Xew York in 1890, “the property of a well-known Brooklyn ceel- lector.” This contained a very complete series, other than those of Xew York, ainoni!: which were a nninber of the irreat rarities, such as the Walton cards of Xew Orleans, llnckel, P>nri(»ws cV .Jenninirs of St. la)iiis, and Loomis of Cleveland. Ohio. There are (piite a number of items in the present list which cannot lx‘ called store cards, and yet we think the predilection of colh'ctors for them (mtitles them to be added. We refer par- ticnlarly to the member checks of the various jockey clnbs, the draya.ue checks, and also the I'estanrant checks. The latter form an e.xtensive series, especially those of Xew York City, and recall many old-time establishments loni? since i)assed away and bring to mind tin* i)ei-iod of Xew York’s history when money values wei'e I’eckoned in shillings and pence. It is i-ecognized that the e.xtensive nature of the snbject treated entails many omissions. These will be iectiti(*d from time to time in future editions, when illustration will be fur- nished together with snch infoiination as may conn* to hand, 'fhe comj)iler will be very grateful to have* omissions brought to his attention, an.l thanks readei-s in advance for any courtesy that may be extended. The small tradesmen’s tokens is>ned during tin* civil war fiom IStil to lS(i-l-, inclusive, are not included in this list, but will be made the snbject of another list, which will be pid)lisiied later. In getting this list tog(*ther a great deal of help has been given by various ))ersons who are interested in the >nbject and it is desir(*d to es|)ecially thank Messrs. Howland Woo 1. David I’roskey, Wayte Raymond, Henry Chapman and F. C. C. Boyd for their generous assistance and the Ann*ri<*an Xnmismatie So- ciety for the opportunity accorded to closely examine its fine store card collection. ALABAMA MOBILE.
