I*. ^ * ^ * 1^ ★ *■ ^ P, *.^*- ^*•*^^^*■'^*" CATALOGUE OF A SPLENDID AND CAPITAL . COLLECTION OF BEING THE CHOICEST SELECTION BOTH FOR RARITY AND IMPRESSION; EVER OFFERED TO THE PUBLICK, WHICH ARE NOW FOR SALE, AT THE PRICES AFFIXED TO EACH, AT S. WOODBURN's, No. 112, ST. MARTIN'S LANE, LONDON. PRINTED BY GEORGE SMEETON, ST. MARTIN'S LaNE, 1815. IN submiUing this collection of British Portraits, it may not be thought improper to make some pre- liminary observations respecting the order of arrange- ment, &c. As this Catalogue embraces almost all the rare articles mentioned in Granger's Biographical History of England, it was conceived a very desirable mode of arrangement to keep the prints in the order of that work, that any Nobleman or Gentleman desirous of completing that interesting scries, could at once as- certain whether the print he desired was in this collec- tion : that order, with very trivial alterations, lias therefore been adhered to. Another observation is necessary to be made — there are no prints specified unless of one guinea value, as it would be almost endless to describe accurately the whole collection ; therefore it was deemed more inter- esting to give a fahhful description of the rare prints herein specified, which is invariably done, with occa- sional remarks, where they differ from those dcbcribed by Mr. Granger. Those Prints, which may be considered unique, or nearly so, are more detailed in their description than those, whose beauty of impression (more than raritj'^,) procures them a place in this catalogue; and when it is considered the time, expence and judgement that ( iv ) was united in forming this splendid assemblage, (which was the study of a gentleman of refined taste for many years) it will readily be allowed by all those con- versant in the pursuit, that it contains more rare prints than any collection offered for sale. The value depends so much on the impression, that the same print may vary from one to twenty guineas. S. W. therefore begs to inform those who may be resident from London, that he will willingly return the money for Portraits not approved of, if or- dered without previous inspection. S. W. has likewise for sale a most extensive col- lection of Prints of all the Schools, from the com- mencement of the Graphic Art to the present time, comprising the finest of the Italian, German, Dutch and Flemish Masters, of the first quality.
