Inscription and date, 1455 - 525 AN ALTAE CANDLESTICK, with hexagonal base, surmounted by a high point, in copper gilt and Spanish enamel " This piece, which is highly curious, is remarkable for its fine preservation, and still more for the six personages engraved upon it by a skilful hand. With a certain idea of heraldry, it is easy to recognize each knight, their armour placed on the housings of their palfreys, being so many speaking arms, which express the names of each of them. As to the two persons on foot, they are two squires holding the standards of these knights. The first, whose housings are embroidered with lilies and the arms of Provence, is Charles of Anjou, King of Sicily, brother of St. Louis ; the second, whose housings are embroidered •with balls, is Peter III., King of Arragon ; the third, with chequered and ermined housings, is Arthur II., Viscomte of Limoges, Due de Bretagne ; the fourth, whose housings are embroidered with oblique bauds, is Robert III., Due de Bourgogne. " It now remains to inquire the occasion which caused the meeting of these princes. " We find in history that Peter III., mentioned above, aspired for the kingdom of Sicily through his wife, daughter of Mainfroy. He seized with avidity the news of the m;issacre of the French at Palermo (the 'Sicilian Vespers,' 1282) to make a descent into Sicily, where he was received as a liberator, and the inhabitants of the isle threw themselves into his arms, so great was their fear of the just resentment of Charles of Anjou, their sovereign. Peter III. was immediately proclaimed King of Sicily, and crowned at Palermo. The Pope, Martin IV., indignant at this usurpation, excommuni- cated the new king, which excommunication he renewed the following year, 1283. Peter III. mocked at the thunders of Rome. He also took little account of the cartel of defiance which Charles of Anjou sent to him to fight with him on June 1, 1283, at Bordeaux, each accompanied by their knights. Charles appeared on the appointed day, and parsed all the day'on the field with two knights, in the sight of an innumerable crowd of strangers drawn together by the novelty of the spectacle. But Peter, though he had accepted the challenge, did not appear at Bordeaux, or if he did come, only stayed a moment, almost alone and disgiiis'jd, and immediately set out for Spain. " After this statement, everything leads to the conclusion that this precious monument has been made in memory of the valorous conduct of Charles of Anjou, and to testify the cowardice of Peter, King of Arragon."
