The ancient hall of the Grocers' Company having become ruinous, was wholly rebuilt in the year 1800, from the annexed designs of Mr. Leverton, many years architect to the Company. The building consists of two stories, the base- ment containing an entrance hall, and access to the principal and second staircases, with numerous and convenient apartments, offices for the servants and attendants of the Company. The principal story containing a spacious and elegant suite of apart- ments, possessing the superior advantage of being all on the same floor, with a general communica- tion, and finished in a style not less honourable to the liberality of the Company than creditable to the taste of the artist : this suite contains the hall, ves- tibule, court-room, committee- room, and warden's room, with various subordinate apartments, the arrangement and dimensions of which are shewn on the Plan, Plate 6. VOL. II. This building was erected in the year 1794, on the east side of a spacious square, for holding the assizes, which are held twice in the year, and for other county meetings; the great room is also used for balls and musical entertainments by the town inhabitants, for which purpose there are gal- leries at each end and the side, opposite to the front windows open to the hall, the whole length of the building, with screens of Ionic columns, which support a coved ceiling. The four fronts of the building are cased with a durable free-stone of a fine colour, from a quarry near to Stafford. Plan and Elevation of Roseneath, in the County of Dumbarton, a Seat of his Grace the Duke of Ar gyle. This noble mansion is building this present year 1803, about one hundred yards west from the old house, which was lately burnt. It is most pleasantly situated on a gently rising ground towards the south ; the north front is about 100 yards from the sea, the east about 160 yards from it ; the sea from the south front is about half a mile distant. Part of the north and west fronts are surrounded by a rich wood of lofty trees, and also along the sea-coasts to the east and south, with pleasant walks within the woods. The lawn on which the house stands extends greatly towards the south ; the whole is encompassed with woods, gardens, pleasure-grounds, &c. The basement story contains all the offices neces- sary for the house ; the bedchamber floor contains a long gallery from east to west, which gives access to many bedchambers, dressing-rooms, and wardrobes, each of which has a separate access ; the attic story contains another gallery and many bed-rooms on each side; and the whole lighted by dormers, which are hidden by the balustrade on the building. The circular part of this building contains three sto- ries above the library, each of which is subdivided in a bedchamber, dressing-room, and servant's bed-room, with private stairs, which give access to each story, and to the top of the roof. PLATES 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22. Plans and Elevations of the Commissioner's House in the Royal Bock-yard at Portsmouth, Hampshire. This house was erected in the year 1785 ; it is situ- ated on the east side of the dock-yard, near the Royal Military Academy, built with Hampshire white bricks and Portland stone dressings. The north or entrance front has a full view of the dock-yard, and the windows of the upper stories com- mand very fine prospects of the surrounding sea. This building is neatly finished in a substantial manner, and was erected on purpose for the residence of the Com- missioner of the dock-yard. On the east side of the house is a very pleasant garden belonging to it. PLATES 23 AND 24. II. PART II. Une 4 of the old house is now standing ; and in order to ob- tain lofty rooms in the new building, the architect has so contrived it, that two stories of the new occupy the space of three in the old house ; and though the old part stands in the centre of the present building, it is so managed as to present an elegant elevation towards the river. This front and ends are covered with stucco, and so worked and tinted as to give the perfect appear- ance of stone. The soil on which the house stands is fertile, dry, and healthy. The best apartments are to the south, and command a perfect view of the river Thames : at the end of the drawing-room is a spacious conservatory, fitted up in an elegant style, to which is a communication by means of large plate-glass doors; and at the end of the dining- room is a looking-glass, of the same form and dimen- sions with the doors ; and when the doors are all thrown open, a suite of elegant apartments is presented, two hundred and sixty feet in length, fitted up with great taste : and by means of looking-glasses over the chim- nies and in the door at the end of the anti-room, a view of the landscape is obtained from both sides ; and the whole is allowed to be one of the most beautiful villas on the banks of the Thames. PLATES 25, 26, 27, AND 28. Plans and Elevation of Attingham, in Shropshire^ a Seat of the Right Hon. Lord Berwick, This noble mansion was erected in the year 1789 ; it is situated on a rising ground about four miles east from Shrewsbury, and is chiefly built of stone; the house commands a variety of prospects over a very fertile country ; among others, a distinct view of the well-known hill called the Wrekin, about six miles south-east ; also distant prospects of the mountains in Wales. At a little distance from the back of the house is a beautiful plantation, through which flows the river Tern, running close to the east end of the build- ing, and forming a junction with the river Severn about half a mile from the front of the house. The high road from London to Shrewsbury is within half a mile of the house, which commands a view of two bridges, the one across the Tern, and the other across the Severn. To the north-west of the house is a village called Berwick, the place from which the family-title was taken ; about a mile to the south-east is a small village called Roxiter, which was a famous city in time of the ancient Romans ; part of the wall which surrounded the city still remains. In the north view from the house, about four miles distance, is Hayman-Hill, famous for being near the place where Douglas was taken prisoner in endeavour- ing to make his escape after the memorable battle with King Henry the IVth and the Prince of Wales, which was fought in that neighbourhood, and that place to this day is called Battlefield. partie de l'ancien bâtiment est encore existante ; et afin d avoir dans la partie neuve des pièces dont le plafond soit élevé, l'architecte a pris ses mesures pour que deux étages de la partie neuve répondent à trois de l'ancienne; et quoique l'ancien bâtiment forme le centre de la maison actuelle, il est disposé de manière à donner une forme élégante à l'élévation qui regarde la rivière. \ EXPLANATION OF THE PLATES. This front commands an extensive view of the town of Shrewsbury, and the windings of the river Severn, with various prospects of the several villages dispersed over a rich and delightful country. PLATE SO. Plan and Elevation of the Stable Offices at Attingham , in Shropshire. This magnificent set of offices is situated about a quarter of a mile north-west of the house, upon a rising ground, and is concealed from the mansion by a plantation ; there is a fine lawn to the west, commanding an extensive prospect of the adjacent country. PLATES 31, 35, 33, 34, and 35. Plans and Elevation of Donington-Park, in Leices- tershire, a Seat of the Right Hon. the Earl of MoiRA. This noble residénce is beautifully situated on the banks of the Trent, 20 miles north from Leicester, and 8 miles south from Derby ; it is equal if not superior in variety and richness of ground, wood, and lawn, to any park of the same extent in Great Britain. The oaks, of which the major part are of great antiquity, are such as would afford, from their pic- turesque appearance, most choice subjects for the study of a painter. The grounds are wholly com- posed of beautifully swelling hills and dipping vallies, on a grand scale, and the whole appears as if nature had determined to leave Httle for art, to make it the ne plus ultra of landscape gardening. The park is bounded on the western side by the river Trent, to which it falls by a declivity rather abrupt, of considerable depth, and great extent, clothed with foliage. The view of this bank, and the river below it, from the opposite shore, is uni- versally admired, and has been the subject of many fine drawings and pictures. The extent of wood on this magnificent bank towards the village of Mel- bourne, has been greatly added to by the present noble possessor. The luxuriance of the soil is such, that it is always, even in the driest seasons, extremely verdant, and affords pasturage throughout the year, for the various species of deer and cattle, with which the park abounds, and which contribute to heighten the natural beauties of the place. The present house, which has been lately erected by his Lordship, stands in a plain formed by the union of three delightful vallies, which radiate from the spot in the directions of east, south, and south- west. The situation is, notwithstanding, conside- rably above the general level of the country. The style of the front and entrance-hall is Gothic, adapted to a plan suggested by his Lordship, and most fitting to the scenery of the place. The house is equally convenient for the residence of either a VOL. II. PART III. PLANCHE 2,9. The principal rooms, namely, the Gothic hall, the dining-room, the anti-chamber, and the draw- ing-room, have a southern aspect; the library looks towards the west, and the breakfast parlour to- wards the east. On this side a wing extends, in which is the chapel, and it is so situated as to screen the offices. The various offices in the ground floor on the north side are very little below the common level of the ground, although the vaults under the 5outh side are entirely sunk, and are appropriated to the butler's department. PLATES 36, 37, and 38. Plans and Elevations of fVoolley Park near Wan- tage in Berkshire^ the seat of the Rev. Philip Wroughton. A residence was built here at the beginning of the last century, and occupied by the considerable family of the Tippings, and formed a dwelling which, according to the style of those days was a respecta- ble manor-house; it was lately altered at a consi- derable expense by the present proprietor; to whom it descended on the death of the late Bartho- lomew Tipping Esq. and now forms a handsome, cheerful, and convenient residence, situated in a deer-park, on an eminence near the direct road from Oxford to Hungerford, though the north lodge only can be seen. It is in the midst of a very con- siderable estate, partly on the spot where our great Alfred performed his ever to be remembered exploits, which property enables a continuation of the same hospitalities as were practised in those early days when that mighty chief divided his loaf. The north-west or entrance-front is ornamented with Portland-stone columns of the Doric order, the projection of the columns forms a gallery to the upper room, in which is placed a billiard-table ; the view from this front is into a finely wooded lawn. The south-west front is adorned with the fluted Grecian Doric order, forming a loggia to the library, and a gallery to the bed and dressing rooms over the library. The offices and stables extend in the midst of plan- tations on the north-east end of the house. His most gracious Majesty is the patron of this noble institution, which was founded under the benign auspices of his Royal Highness the Duke of York, Commander in Chief. The establishment consists of one thousand chil- dren, and is supported by national munificence; in the centre- building on the upper floors are school- rooms for the children, a chapel, committee-rooms, and apartments for the secretary. In the wings, on the upper floors are dormitories for the children, and the hospital apartments for the commandant, chaplain, surgeon, steward, and the other officers of the establishment. 7 EXPLANATION OF THE PLATES. PLATES XLIII AND XLIV. Plans and Elevation of the Coffee-Room and Library, called the Athenaeum, at Liverpool, in Lancashire. This elegant building contains a CofFee-Room of superior magnitude, and a Library furnished with upwards of six thousand volumes : the rooms are adequate to the accommodation of five hundred subscribers. The plan of this building was designed by Mr. Foster, and was erected with uncommon celerity, under his direction. The whole was completed in the year 1799, for about four thousand five hundred pounds. The institution received the title of Athen^um, and is the property of the subscribers. By an addition to the original number of sub- scribers, the committee were enabled to give every convenience and elegance to the rooms, and to accelerate the purchase of many valuable books, to an extent, which, according to their original plan, could only have been effected in a series of years. The rooms are open at all times to subscribers; and strangers are admitted upon the introduction of a subscriber, either personally or by letter. The coffee-room was opened on the first of January, 1799: the library-room on the first of July following. The prosperity of the Athenaeum has been chiefly derived from the general union of public sentiment in its favour, and the remarkable unanimity with which its affairs have been con- ducted. PART IV. EXPLICATION DES PLANCHES. PLANCHES XLIII and XLIV. De quelque endroit qu'on y arrive, excepté du on every approach, except from the north, is truly grand : it exhibits most extensive masses of wood, finely combined and diversified with fields and lawn. The situation of the castle is considerably elevated upon the south side of a hill: to the south the ground falls gradually, and opens into an extensive valley bounded by the Irvine. To the north, the ground has a considerable ascent : to the east and west it is more level ; and the whole surface is finely diversified and covered with timber, for the growth of which the soil is par- ticularly favourable. The castellated style has been preferred for the building, as best adapted to the bold outline of the country, and the surrounding scenery. The library, the dining-room and the second drawing-room, command a most extensive view to the south-west, over the rich and finely di- versified county of Air. To the south-east the view is more limited, but not less interesting, embracing the bold out- line of well-wooded mountains, and part of the delightful valley, in which are situated the towns of Newnulls and Derval ; and at the extremity of the valley is Loudoun hill, remarkable for being a vast basaltis rock; and, on account of its great elevation, it is seen at an immense distance in all directions. The principal apartments are now fitting up in a style of noble simplicity, agreeable to the chaste rules of art. The kitchen, and necessary offices to the kitchen, are attached to the east end of the castle; but the ground being too confined to admit all the offices required, in a line with the centre of the castle, eastward, an handsome bridge is thrown over a deep ravine, at the extremity of which are placed other offices, such as brew-house, wash- house, laundry, &c. in a style corresponding with the rest of the building. 9 EXPLANATION OF THE PLATES. * PLATES LVII, LVIII, and LIX. Plan and Elevations of Pitsh anger-Place, at Ealing, in Middlesex. In 1768 the late Mr. Gurnell, the proprietor of this estate, employed Mr. Dance, the architect to the city of London, to make designs for the improvements of the house and offices, and under his diredions many very considerable alterations and additions were made at a very large ex- pense. Captain Payton afterwards became possessed of the estate, and in the year 1800 sold it to Mr. Soane the architect, who found it necessary to take down the whole of the building, with the exception of the two rooms at the fouth end, built in the year 1768 : the interior of these rooms have undergone very little alteration, and afford a specimen of the taste of that day. The present possessor has added to these rooms a small villa, which he has spared no expense to enrich with many valuable pictures, antique mar- bles, Etruscan vases, and a very large collection of casts from antique subjects. The approach to the house has been entirely changed, and considerable alterations have been^ made in the pleasure grounds. PLATES LX. AND LXI. Plans andEIevations of Osberto:n-Iîouse, in Not- tinghamshire, the Seat ofF. F. Foljambe, Esq. M.P. This house is situated on the northern side of "the county of Nottingham, three miles from Worksop and five from Retford, on a dry sandy soil. By the addition which the present possessor has made of the adjoining estates of Scofton and Ray- ton the whole is become a moil desirable resi- dence, uniting in itself the three great essentials of extent, beauty and comfort. The estate abounds with wood, which is an- nually increasing by the growth of new planta- tions of timber, particularly oak and larch. A rivulet which runs through the whole has been so enlarged in front of the house, and for some distance to the east and west, as to present the appearance of a considerable natural river. This effect has been produced under the im- mediate direction of its owner, who possesses a degree of taste and judgment, which is perhaps surpassed by few of those who have made it their study to display to the greatest advantage the beauties of nature, and to supply her defeds by the exertions of art. The ground on which the house stands rises with a considerable degree of boldness on the south side of the river. The views are more pic- turesque than extensive, the scenery tranquil and woody. The fore-ground which is finely inter- spersed with the noblest oaks, elms and beeches, both single and in groupes, is backed by exten- sive woods, some of which amongst other timber contain in particular spruce firs of the largest dimensions, beautifully feathered to the ground. explication DES PLANCHES. 10 The house has received such additions under the superintendance of Mr. Wilkins, architect, as renders it a very convenient family residence, pos- sessing also extensive accommodations for visitors. PLATES LXII, LXIII, and LXIV. Plans and Elevations of Middleton-Ha.ll, the County of Caer mar then, South-Wales y the Seat of Sir William Paxton. The house is seated on an eminence, in the middle of an extensive park, at a ihort diftance from the river Tov^ey, containing a great quan- tity of ground, wood and water, and many beau- tiful glens and water- falls; it commands from the principal rooms good views of the ornamental scenery of the park, and extensive prospects of the water of Towey, and the varied country on its borders, which is terminated by the distant moun- tains. At the north end of the house, detached and covered by plantations, are the domestic offices and stables, which are concealed from the different approaches to the mansion, and have also a near communication with the gardens and hot-houses. The basement story contains the servants' apart- ments and cellars ; and concealed within the roof, and lighted internally, are ample lodging-rooms. The house is built with brick stuccoed, the projections are of Bath stone. PLATES LXV, LXVI, LXVII, LXVIÎI, LXIX, AND LXX. Plan and Elevations of Castle-Coole, in the County of Fermanagh , in Ireland, the seat of the Right Hon. Viscount Bel m ore. The foundation-ftone of this noble mansion was laid in June 1790, and the building was finished in the year 1797; all the fronts are faced with Portland stone, and the principal apartments are decorated with uncommon elegance, and the finishing of the workmanship finely executed. The building is beautifully situated on the top of elevated p;round, about seven miles distant from Belmore-Mountain, from which his lordship derives his title : the approach on the south-east or en- trance-front crosses over a canal by a bridge ; each front has a lawn before it, and toward the east and west are low meadows and pasture ground. From the house is an interesting prospect of the adjacent hills planted with ash, beech, forest and various sorts of trees bordering the lawns. A canal takes its course from the lake towards the south-east of the house, through the lawns north- ward and eastward ; another canal comes from the deer-park through the east meadows. The north-west front commands an extensive prospect of an open hilly country, and a distinct view of a lake or piece of water about a mile in circumference, situated northerly from the man- sion : this front also commands a view of Bel- more-Mountain to the left, and of the Topping- Mountain to the right ; the last mentioned about three miles distant. The road to Inniskilling goes north-weil: of the manfion between the lake and head of the large canal ; that town is about a mile from Castle-Coole, but is not seen from the building. T. Benlley, Printer, liolt Court, Fleec Street, Lundon.
