Earl of Wemyss andMarch, Earl of Zetland, LONDON : PRINTED BY HENRY GOOD & SON, 12, MOORGATE STREET, E.C INTRODUCTION. WHEN the idea of a Sports and Arts Exhibition first assumed a tangible form, it was the intention of the Committee to bring together a series of Works of Art illustrative of the growth and development of each of the principal phases of Sport — a series equally interesting, historically and artistically. It soon became evident that the space at their command would prove absolutely inadequate for the carrying out of such a plan. They have therefore restricted themselves to bringing together a various collection in which most forms of field sports are exemplified. They trust that they have succeeded in showing how Sport and Art have been always intimately connected, and how many great men have given their best work towards illustrating the various features of animal life, and of scenery, which are beloved by the hunter and the fisherman. They have also brought together some examples of the silversmith and armourers' work as devoted to Sporting objects. Lastly, the collection of trophies tells of the prowess of our fellow-countrymen " in fiery joys, by field and flood," all over the inhabited and uninhabited globe. The Committee beg most gratefully to acknowledge the assistance given them by Mr. Algernon Graves by his unrivalled- knowledge of Sir Edwin Landseer ; to Mr. Rowland Ward, for the ready aid afforded them in bringing together the variety of trophies which adorn the walls of the Grosvenor ; and to Mr. Purdey and Mr. Spiller, who kindly collected and arranged the various arms and Sporting Implements. Lastly, the Committee tender their respectful acknowledgments to the generosity of the friends of Sport, headed by H.M. The Queen and the Royal Princes, who have rendered it possible to bring the collection herein catalogued together. CATALOGUE. PEDIGREE— DESCRIPTION— HISTORY. Also History of Celebrated English and French Thorough-Bred Stallions and French Mares which appeared on the Turf from 1764 to 1887. By S. F. Touchstone. You ask me for my opinion upon Thorough -bred Horses and their utility, as well as upon the utility of Racing. My reply is a very simple one : Everybody hopes that the prevailing spell of peace may not be broken, and that we shall have no more war ; which explains why, according to the old adage, everybody is preparing for it. As regards the cavalry, the object kept in view is to have horses of great power and endurance, capable of withstanding the maximum of fatigue. It is from the thorough-bred alone that such animals can be derived ; nothing but repeated crosses with the thorough-bred can confer upon the horses used for army remounts the stamina which is indispensable for them. But the breeding of thoroughbreds is a very costly amusement, and, in order to induce breeders to produce the animals required, it is imperative to offer them some substantial inducements and to stimulate their emulation. This is the object of racing, which admits of their covering part, at all events, of the enormous expenses which they have to meet, while the pleasure of seeing their horses first past the post is very gratifying to their amour-propre. So, if only the rearing of thorough-breds be cultivated, and racing encouraged, there will be no lack of remounts for the cavalry. With the telegraph, semaphores, and electric signals of every kind being multiplied, it is imperative that cavalry should be more rapid in its movements than it was during the glorious campaigns of Napoleon I. It is, therefore, essential that the horses of the present day should have more blood than those mounted by the gallant Cuirassiers, Chasseurs, Lancers, and Hussars of that epoch. This object will never be attained unless the production of the thorough-bred horse be cultivated and encouraged, and racing is the only means to this end. BEAUFORT.
