Originally divided by a transom, which is now broken away, but indications of it remain on each side. The lower portion was probably fitted with a small door, through which offerings were put when presented to the altar. These are sometimes called “ Lychnocopic,” or "offertory” windows. The lower portion of the clerestory is blocked up by the present aisle roof. 14 . SOUTH PORCH, WEST WALTON CHURCH, NORFOLK. In this plate the gable, the springing of which is remaining, has been restored, and the pinnacles terminated with finials. The form of the present gable, which is of brickwork, is indicated by the dotted lines. 15 . PLAN AND DETAILS OF DITTO. The south aisle has been at some time widened, when the porch appears to have been cut in half, the inner portion taken away, and the south door re-erected in the new wall. These are very irregular, scarcely two of the sides being of the same width, and the sliafts are of different lengths ; — the total height, however, is the same. 18 . Tliis window also was taken down and re-erected at the time the aisle was widened. The broad sunk chamfer, embracing the whole internally, is evidently later than the window itself, and the jointing does nut range with the other work. Probably this was added at the time the aisle was widened. The alteration would thus appear to iiave taken place during the 14th century. One of the internal foliated capitals will be found given §rds full size, in the “ Gothic Ornaments,” Vol. I., Plate 61. 23 . WINDOW FROM BINIIAM PRIORY, NORFOLK. The transom received the groining of the aisle ; the upper portion of the window lighted the triforium. 'I’he aisles are now in ruins. 24 . DOOR FROM DITTO DITTO. 25 . This is an internal window, and at present is without glass. 7 . SOUT-H PORCH FROM BENNINGTON CHURCH, LINCOLNSHIRE. The gable appears to have been kept flat, and as close to the head of the arch as possible, so that the roof should come below the eaves of that over the aisle. 8. In the nave the bench ends have niches containing the Apostles, and above these are figures, which appear to represent the seven deadly sins ; — those remaining are adultery, drunkenness, avarice, murder, and suicide (the one represented). They are all sitting in the jaws of monsters from the mouths of which issue flames. On the opposite side Angels stand pointing towards them. The bench ends in the aisles are plainer, with figures carved upon them — as mermaid, lion, cock- atrice, sitting men, carpenter with nails, &c. 13. SEATING, NORTH SIDE OF NAVE, WIGGENHALL, ST. MARY THE VIRGIN, NORFOLK. 14. DITTO DITTO DITTO. This seating remains as anciently arranged ; on the north side of the nave for men, the south for women. The men’s seating is raised considerably above the paving of the aisles, and the bench ends large and massive. Tlie seating for women is kept lower than that for the men, and the bench ends smaller and plainer. In the nave each has a figure of the Blessed Virgin in a niche, with the letters V.^S, carved above, which are also occasionally introduced in the open backs.
