ART SALES. ^ The collection of ancient and modem pictures and water-colour drawings of the late Mr. John Bibby, of St. Asaph came up for sale at Messrs. Christie, MausoQ, and Woods's on Saturday, when 157 lots realized a total of £5,211. The collection comprised an inte- resting series of seven drawings and one picture in oils by D. G. Rossetti. The drawings were as follows -. — Beata Eeatnx, in crayons, dated 1872, 34in. by 27in., intended to illustrate symbolically the death of Beatrice, as treated in the " Vita Nuova " — 100 guineas (Agnew) —at the L. R. Valpy snle in 1888 this realized 200 guineas ; '* The Loring Cup," 1867, 21in. by 14in. — '• 275 guineas (Tooth) ; a lady in blue dress, green branch behind her, 19in. by 16in. — 190 guineas (Webster) ; a lady in white dress, combing her hair, 14in. by li;in.,1864 — 320 guineas (Dunthome) ; Venus Verticordia, in red chalk, SGin. by 23in., 1867—280 guineas (Webster) — from the Lieyland sale of 1802, when it realized 120 guineas ; " Color d'Amore E di Pieta Sembiante," black and white chalk, 1870 — 40 guineas (Agnew) ; and *' Monna Vanna " (Mrs. Howell), 1869, chalk— 55 guineas (Agnew)— in 1890 this drawing realized 35 guineas. The Rossetti picture in oils, *' La Pia : Pia de' ToUomei, "illustrates the story of the youthful wife of Nello della Pietra, of Siena, in Dante's '• Purgatorio " ; it was in the Leyland sale of 1892 (when it realized 300 guineas), and was exhibited at Burlington House in 1883 — 260 guineas (King). The other pictures by modern artists included the following : —Ford Madox Brown, Chaucer at the Court of King Edward III., 48in. by 39in., painted in 1868, and from the Leyland sale, 1892 (when it realized 100 guineas) — 85 guineas (Dunthome) ; and an ealier work by the same artist, Elijah and the widow's son, 1864, from the Trist Bale, 1892 (42 guineas) — 135 guineas (Dunthorne) ; W. Kogarth, portrait of Soli na, Countess of Huntingdon, in mauve dress with lace fichu aud cap, holding a book — 95 guineas (Ichenhauser) ; two by A, Hughes, " Ophelia," 36in. by 23in. — 70 guineas (Lees), and " Endymion, " 27in. by 40in.— 55 guineas (McLean) ; G.
