BENJAMIN WEST, Esq. PRESIDENT OF THE ROYAL ACADEMY, . h'c. h'c. (b'c. THIS CATALOGUE IS INSCRIBED, AS A TESTIMONY OF RESPECT, ^ DUE TO THE EXALTED TALENTS, WHICH HAVE PLACED HIM IN THE HIGHEST RANK OF HIS PROFESSION. PREFACE. Being poffeffed of feveral good Portraits which belonged to my fa- mily, I began, forty years ago, to make additions to them. I have lately had an opportunity of increafmg my colle6lion, fo that, I be- lieve, there are few more numerous. I have always confidered the Coins, Medals, and Portraits, of diffe- rent ages, as very intimately connected with the Hiftory of the coun- tries to which they belong. To the lovers of Hiftory and of the Fine Arts, they mull be peculiarly interefting. My chief objeft, with regard to my Portraits, was to afcertain the Perfon reprefented, the Artift, the Date, and the Connexion of the Perfon with different Families ; leaving, in general, the charafter and iranfa6lions to be gathered from Hiflory and Biography. It is much to be regreted, that fcarce any of the ancient Portraits, liave either the name of the artifl, the perfon, or date on the pifture, fo E 3 fo that I was obliged to lake a great deal of palnS;, from Prints^, Medals, and Hiflory, to find them out ; and I flatter myfelf, that in general, they are pretty well afcertained. The drefs of the different reigns in which they lived, was a great help ; as before this century, very few people prefented themfelves to a painter, except thofe who were of great families, or remarkable for their actions in the fervice of their country, or for fome other extraordinary circumllance, fo that the field for enquiry was not fo extended, as lately, when every body almoft who can afford twenty pounds, has the portraits of himfelf, wife, and children, painted. Thofe, therefore, who colleft next century, even with the aid of the annual Exhibition, will hardly be able to find out the numerous bad painters, and the uninterefting obfcure perfons fo reprefented. It is furprifing how often curious old portraits are found in places, where nobody almoft would ever think of looking for them. They are found thrown out of many houfes for lumber, the name of the Ar- tift, and Perfon reprefented, being unknown ; or are fold to pay debts, or to make way for the modern faihion of papering rooms. I know many houfes, where very fine Portraits are put up to garrets, and ne- gleftcd, while their places are fupplied with an eight-penny paper. I have lately had the good fortune to purchafe many curious Por- traits and Pictures fmuggled over from France, fmce the beginning of the Revolution there. The royal Portraits were brought from many different places : I began to colle6i; them long ago ; many of them are very rare, and in great prefervation. DUFF-HOUSE. 1. Duke of B run/wick, 2. The Chevalier D'Eon was edu- f ^IC^Xi cated in a College at Paris, and was an officer of Dragoons. He was fent to Peterfburgh as a Mil- liner, to carry on a fecret and particular negotia- tion between the courts of Verfailles and Peterf- burgh. When he was admitted with his milli- nery goods, he told the late Emprefs of Rullia, that he had a letter for her Imperial Majefty, upon which fhe bought all his goods. He was alfo fent to Peterfburgh in a public charadler, and was always dreffed in a regimental fuit. He was fent to England as Charge d'Aflaires, when the Count de Guerchy was Ambaffador at the Court of St. James's. It was at that time, this picture was painted. During that period al- fo, he had a difpute with the Count de Guerchy. Some years after, he was difcovered to be of the female fex. Upon this he was recalled to Paris, and when at Calais, two officers of the Po- lice of Paris arrefted him, and compelled him to leave his male drefs, and be dreffed like a woman, to his great difappointment. When fhe arrived at Paris, flie abufed the Government in her con- verfation, and was therefore fent an exile to Bur- gundy. After the Revolution in France, flie fpent her life in England or Ireland, and was found fencing in many places upon a flage, for which reafon, many families who would have othcrwife protec- ted her, flmt their doors againfl her. Henry, fon of John of Gaunt, Diike of Lancafter, got the crown by ufurpation, and held it by the fword ; a tenure which gave him perpetual difquietude, and afterwards opened fuch a fcene of blood and cruelty, as is hardly to be paralelled in any hiftory ; and it was not clof- ed till the two houfes of York and Lancafter were united in the perfon of Henry VII. Sometime before his death he took the crofs and propofed to take a voyage to Jerufalem., but this he did not live to accomplifii. Having had feveral fits of apoplexy, the lad one feized him as he was worlhipping at the ftirine of St. Edward, in Weftminfter Abbey ; he was carried into the Jerufalem chamber, belonging to the Abbot, where he expired in the 46th year of his age, having reigned 13 years, 5 months, and n days, and was buried in Canterbury cathedral.
