Born in Burford in Oxfordshire, England. He began the study of law, but later took a fancy to study art, and finally so distinguished himself that he was made portrait painter to Queen Charlotte and instructor to the princesses. " All London flocked to his studio." He at one time attempted fancy subjects, as the " Morning Star" and "Evening Star," but later devoted himself to painting portraits. His work is noted for its freshness of color and truth to nature. 9 Portrait of Mrs. Ashley. Lent by Mr. Robert C. Vose. CARLSEN (Emil). Contemporary. Born in Denmark, and came to America in 1872, and is best known as a painter of still-life. 33 Still-Life. Lent by Mrs. Charles F. Lyman. CAZIN (Jean Charles). 1841. Born at Samer, Pas-de-Calais, France. " Like the artists of the Renaissance, Cazin can express himself by the most various means, — sculpture, oil painting, water colors, pastel, ... to say nothing of his ceramic work." " He gives us the impression of a thoughtful, serious, and yet hopeful nature. . . . He paints men that he has seen, trees that really grow, skies that he has not invented, and reeds whose sad music he has overheard. ... It is by the exact and sympa- thetically emotional rendering of effects of light, that M. Cazin invariably develops and enforces his theme." A I La Vielle Route. Lent by Miss Annette P. Rogers. [9] CHIFFLART. " This artist, contemporary with Delacroix, was a great color- ist of fame. His pictures are very rare, and but few of his works ever came to America." 76 Nymphs crowning the Statue of Pan. 78 The Revelry of the Satyrs. Lent by Mr. Charles A. Walker. CLOUET (FRAN901S). About 1 500-1 573. Born at Tours, France. He succeeded his father as Court painter to Francis I. in 1541, and held the same office under Henri II. and Charles IX. His works include a portrait of the Dauphin Fran9ois at Antwerp (1524), a full-length por- trait of Henri II. at the Louvre, and a portrait of Elizabeth of Austria, also in the Louvre. 70 Portrait of King Edward VI. of England. From the collection of the Due de Sforza, Rome. Lent by Mons. E. Gimpel, care of Messrs. Dowdeswell & Dowdeswell, 275 Fifth Avenue, New York. CONSTABLE (John), R.A. 1776-1837. Born in Suffolk, England. He was a painter of landscape and a very independent thinker. His work had a strong influence upon French landscape painting. His friend and biographer, Leslie, predicted for him "the praise of having been the most genuine painter of English landscapes that has ever lived." 10 Weymouth Bay, England. Lent by Mr. Justice Loring. COPLEY (John Singleton), R.A. 1735-1815. Born in Boston, Mass. He was seventeen years old when he fairly embarked in the profession of painting. He painted [10] both portraits and historical subjects, but his talents lay dis- tinctly in the direction of portraiture. " The want of ease and nature in these time-hallowed portraits is, indeed, as authentic as their costumes. . . . There is that about them which precludes the very idea of taking a liberty." In 1776 Copley moved to London, where his reputation had already secured for him a cordial reception, and he was soon made a member of the Royal Academy. 7 1 Portrait of himself. Painted prior to the Revolution. Exhibited by the St. Botolph Club in 1901 and at Copley Hall in 1898. Lent by Mr. G. G. Hammond. 32 Portrait of Lord Lyndhurst. (?) Painted in England. Lent by Messrs. Dowdeswell & Dowdeswell, 275 Fifth Avenue. 7 Portrait of Col. Joseph Scott. Exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum about 1869 or 1870. Lent by Mr. George Scott Winslow. 79 Portrait of Hon. Jonathan Jackson. Lent by Miss M. C. Jackson. COROT (Jean Baptiste Camille). 1796-1875. Born in Paris. While he did not by any means confine him- self to landscape painting, Corot is most widely known by his landscapes. The silvery tones of early dawn and the mystery of twilight had a special charm for him. He was essentially a poet, " striving with material substances to convey the im- pression made on a poetic mind by the aspects of nature." 47 Landscape with Cows. 28 Twilight. A 2 Birches. Lent by Mr. H. L. Higginson. 5 I Landscape with Small Figure. Lent by Mrs. John T. Morse, Jr. 48 Landscape with Cattle. Lent by Mrs. Barthold Schlesinger. 52 L'Etang, Ville d'Avray. 49 Landscape. Lent by Mr. Eben D. Jordan. 50 En Provence. Lent by Mr. Robert C. Vose. COURBET (Gustave). 18 19-1877. Born at Ornans, France. He is the strongest, the truest, and most satisfying of the realists. His best works were his landscapes. In seeing them, one is sure that this painter had a sentiment and love of the beautiful in nature, and that he did himself violence when he affected the ugly only." 61 La Curee. Lent by Mr. Henry Sayles. DAUBIGNY (Charles FRAN901S). 1817-1878. Born at Paris, France. Daubigny was a landscape painter and an officer of the Legion of Honor. " The art of this illustrious painter consists of choosing well a bit of country, and painting it as it is, enclosing in its frame all the simple and naive poetry which it contains." " For a certain massiveness of handling, and justness in rendering the values, he stands alone." 75 Landscape. Lent by Mrs. Barthold Schlesinger. [12] DAVID (Jacques Louis). 1748-1825. Born at Paris, France. David was a diligent student of the antique, — as a reaction from the affectations of Vanloo and Boucher. DEGAS (Hilaire-Germain Edgar). Born in Paris in 1834. He painted portraits for a time, but was induced by Manet's example to devote himself to modern life, — to " grace in motion, to scenes from the race- course and the theatre." Again, through the influence of Japanese art, he became a decorative painter. He is distin- guished by the science and precision of his drawing, especially with pastel, which enables him to get an exquisite and har- monious color effect, as well as great perfection of drawing. 87 Foyer de la Danse. Painted between 1878 and 1880, his best period. Exhibited at the St. Botolph Club in 1901. Lent by Mr. G. G. Hammond. DIAZ DE LA PENA (Narcisse Virgile). i 807-1 876. Born at Bordeaux, France. Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. "The versatile, unequalled, impetuous Diaz, a brilliant colorist by blood, so much so as to obscure design, but charming in his ^^'wr^'-landscape motives, in which he intro- duced little children, lovely women, or classical nymphs, . . . whatever best affords him scope for his rich flesh tints, in contrast with magnificently colored draperies, on the deep greens and browns of vegetation." 72 Landscape. Durand-Ruel, 389 Fifth Avenue, New York. FROMENTIN (Eugene). 1820-1876. Born at La Rochelle, France. A painter of landscape and especially of the East. We enjoy the freedom of the desert, and rejoice at escaping the confinement and artifice of the studio." 2 Halt on the Edge of the Desert. Exhibited at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878. Lent by Mr. Eben D. Jordan. FROTHINGHAM (James). A portrait painter of some eminence in New York, Boston, and Salem about 1800. He has been called "the Stuart of Salem.'' He was, after Snyders, the greatest animal painter of the Flemish School, excelling in sunny effects of light. " He renders the fur of animals and the plumage of birds with exquisite truth." 63 Game Piece, From Sir F. W. Burton's Collection. Lent by Mrs. F. G. Macomber. [14] HARPIGNIES (Henri). Born at Valenciennes, France, in 1819. He is a painter of landscape, both in oils and water colors. A number of his works are in the gallery of the Luxembourg. " Harpignies is always the poet." 12 Paysage: Coucher de Soleil. Exhibited at the Salon in 1899. Lent by Hon. W. A. Clark. A3 Landscape: Noonday (1876). Lent by Mr. Eben D. Jordan. (Attributed to.) 58 Pigeons. 65 Fowls. Lent by Mrs. Charles F. Lyman. HOOGH (Pieter de). The only information to be had about Pieter de Hoogh is derived from the dates that are found on his pictures, — 1656- 1670. He was evidently a follower of Rembrandt. He [>5] painted genre pictures, and may be considered far excellence the painter of full and clear sunlight. " His prevailing local color is red, repeated with great delicacy in various planes of distance/' 56 A Game of Tric-trac. Lent by Mr. Robert C. Vose. HOPPNER (John), R.A. 1758-1810. Although essentially a portrait painter, Hoppner also excelled in landscape painting. His style was formed somewhat on that of Sir Joshua Reynolds. 19 Portrait of Richard Cosway, the Painter. Lent by Mr. W. B. Thomas. HUNT (William Morris). 1824-1879. Born at Brattleboro, Vt. He was a portrait, landscape, and decorative painter, and a pupil of Couture and Millet. " The genius of Hunt is eminently creative. . . . Whether dealing with the animated expression of real life, or the naive phases of nature, or the simple expression of character, there is a true grace and power in his work that instantly reveals an original artistic genius." 53 Landscape. Lent by Mr. H. L. Higginson. ISRAELS (Josef). Born at Groningen, Belgium, in 1824. Israels is a genre painter, especially of the more pathetic incidents in the life of a seafaring people. Lawrence had an almost unrivalled career as a portrait painter. He was especially fortunate in his [17] portraits of women and in his groups of mothers and children. Nevertheless, his portraits of the Emperor Francis, of Pius VII., and of the Cardinal Gonzalvi are considered to rank among the greatest masterpieces of art. William Etty, his pupil, writes of him that " his execution was perfect, — playful, yet precise ; elegant, yet free.'* 44 Portrait of Fanny Kemble. Lent by Mr. George A. Hearn, New York. 17 Portrait of Francis Moore, Esq., brother of Sir John Moore. Lent by Mr. W. B. Thomas. LE BRUN (Marie Louise Elizabeth) (nee Vigee). 1755-1842. His pictures are rare, and much prized. " The na- ivete and homeliness of his feeling, with the addition, some- times, of a touch of humor, the admirable and generally striking lighting, the deep and very warm (seldom cool) harmony, and a touch resembling Rembrandt in impasto and vigor, — all these qualities render his pictures very attractive." 66 The Young Widow. "JanSteenis indubitably, after Rembrandt, the most genial painter of the whole Dutch School." His abundant feeling for invention, in which he far surpasses all other genre painters of the school, gives expression to . . . boundless high spirits and fun ; while in every other quality, composition, keeping, coloring, impasto, spirited yet careful touch, he yields, when he puts forth his whole strength, to none of them." 67 La Lecon de Guitare. Born in Covent Garden, London. In his fifteenth year he was admitted to the Royal Academy as a student, and exhibited there the year following, becoming an Associate Member in 1800 and an Academician in 1802. In 1807 he became a professor in the Royal Academy, and began his drawings for the " Liber Studiorum." Turner was chiefly a Water-color painter in early life ; . . . and the contrast of style between his early and later work is remarkable, the latter distinguished for its excessive looseness of execution, the former for its elaborate finish, and, compared with his ordinary work, for a coldness of color. ... In middle life he adopted a much freer mode of execution and a greatly richer style of coloring. His finest works belong to this middle period. He left his large fortune to found an institution for indigent artists, and his pictures to the nation. The Na- tional Gallery thus possesses about one hundred of his finished pictures. 26 Edinburgh Castle, Painted in 18 14. Lent by Dr. A. T. Cabot. 18 Sailing-vessels in a Storm, off Sheerness.
