His last appearance on the stage took place on March 25th, 1833, at Covent Garden, on which occasion he appeared with his son, Charles, who played Iago to his father's Othello. He was too ill to finish the performance. He died on the 15th of May, 1833, and was buried at Richmond." 403. Kean (Edmund). A print of " The Deathbed of Kean," by George Cruikshank. "My dear Mr. Sheridan. — When I had the pleasure of seeing you at Sir Joshua's exhibition, you did me the honour to express a strong desire that I should read in public your monody on the death of Garrick. Uttered by one who has long lived in the study of his art, and who must at no great distance of time follow him also to that Eternity whither he has gone, it must, I think, produce a most powerful effect, unless, indeed, those sad paths be so deeply impressed on my feelings as to render the utterance of them quite unintelligible, for it is most certain that I never yet was able to read that lovely poem without weeping most plenteously. Now, pray do think of this, for some little altera- tion at this distance of time you will, of course, think necessary. It is my intention to associate you with bards no less illustrious than Shak- spere and Milton. Pray send (and very soon) a propitious answer to the request of your faithful admirer, S. Siddons. The engraver thus chosen by the " Tragic Muse " herself was Francis Haward, A.E. This commission involved Sir Joshua Reynolds in a " pretty quarrel ' with Valentine Green, A.E., who had probably been favoured in the first instance by the artist. Green denied the existence of the above letter, and Reynolds, to prove his own innocence in the matter and to clear his character, forwarded this very letter to the angry engraver, Avho was thus disappointed of the commission. Val. Green would have done full justice to the painting. The story is given at length in the ''Life of Sir J. Reynolds," by Leslie and Taylor. 425. William Henry West Betty (Master) as Hamlet.
