Eaton. tJa 02 JOHN EVERETT MILLAIS, 1st BARONET. Born 1829. A.E.A. 1853; It.A, 1861; P.lt.A. 1896. Died 1896. John Everett Millais was born at Southampton on June 8, 1829. His family had for some generations been resident in Jersey. The hent of the boy’s mind declared itself at a very early age, as may be seen by reference to No. 218 in the present Exhibition, a frame containing drawings done when he was only seven years old. As he showed great promise of success as an artist his parents, when he was nine years old, brought him to London for the purpose of taking advice with reference to his future career. Being encouraged by Sir Martin Archer Shee, then President of the Royal Academy, to whom his drawings were shown, to “do all in their power to help the cultivation of his faculties, and to speed him in the career for which Nature had evidently intended him,” they settled in London, and sent him, in the winter of 1838-39, to a preparatory school for the Academy kept by Henry Sass. Here he won a Silver Medal given by the Society of Arts for a Drawing from the Antique, and also began the study of composition (see No. 220). Two years after, on December 12, 1840, when only eleven years old, he was admitted a Student at the Royal Academy. The Drawing from the Antique which he did for the preliminary admission as a Probationer on July 17, 1840, is No. 187 in the present Exhibition. A year later he made his first essay in oil (No. 68), and about the same time executed some remarkable drawings for a boy of his age, e. g. No. 209. In 1843 ho was awarded the first Silver Medal for a Drawing from the Antique in the Academy Schools; and in 1847 obtained the Gold Medal for a Historical Painting, the subject being, “ The Young Men of Benjamin Seizing their Brides.” Previous to this, in 1846, he had exhibited his first picture at the Royal Academy, “ Pizarro Seizing the Inca of Peru ” (now in the South Kensington Museum), followed, in 1847, by “Elgiva,” while in this last year he took part in the Westminster Hall competition for the decoration of the Houses of Parliament. In 1848 he became connected with what was called the Pre-Raphaelite movement, being one of the seven original and only members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The in¬ fluence which this movement exercised over him is seen in the next work 6 he exhibited, in 1849, “ Isabella ” (No. 23), and in many subsequent ones, with gradually decreasing distinctness down to about 1860. During the whole of this period he had been a regular exhibitor at the Eoyal Academy, and in 1853, when only twenty-four years old, was elected an Associate. His election as an Academician followed in 1864. Residing permanently in London, his autumn holiday was nearly always spent in Scotland, shooting and fishing, and the result of this outdoor life was seen in 1871, which witnessed his first appearance as a landscape painter. “ Chill October” (No. 108) was followed by many other landscapes, all more or less derived from the same inspiration and painted in the same neighbourhood. On the death of Lord Leighton in January 1896, he was on February 20 unanimously elected President of the Eoyal Academy, but only held the post six months, his death occurring in August of the same year. In the previous year he had, in the absence of Lord Leighton, presided at the Academy Dinner, and nothing could better show the tie that existed between him and the body of which he was subsequently chosen as the head, than the following extract from his speech in responding to the toast of the Eoyal Academy : “ I must tell you briefly my connection with this Academy. I entered the Antique School as a Probationer when I was eleven years of age, then became a Student in the Life School, and I have risen from stage to stage until I reached the position I now hold of Eoyal Academician; so that, man and boy, I have been intimately connected with this Academy for more than half a century. I have received here a free education as an artist—an advantage any lad may enjoy who can pass a qualifyiug examination, and I owe tne Academy a debt of gratitude I can never repay. I can, however, make this return—I can give it my love. I love everything belonging to it —the casts I have drawn from as a boy, the books I have consulted in our Library, the very benches I have sat on.” In 1885 the honour of a baronetcy was conferred upon him by Her Majesty. Among other dignities and honours that he received, in addition to those already spoken of, it may be mentioned that he held Honorary Degrees at the Universities of Oxford and Durham; was an Associate of the Institute of France; an Honorary Member of the Eoyal Scottish and the Eoyal Hibernian Academies; and a Member of the Academies of Vienna, Belgium, Antwerp, and of St. Luke, Eome, and San Fernando, Madrid; was an officer of the Legion of Honour, of the Order of Leopold, of the Order of St. Maurice, and of the Prussian Order “Pour le Merite.” His death took place on August 13, 1896, at the house which he had built in Palace Gate, Kensington. In Gallery III. there is a bust of Sir John Millais, the diploma wrnrk of Sir Edgar Boehm, E.A., executed in 1883; and in Gallery VI. another bust of the deceased painter, by Mr. E. Onslow Ford, E.A., done shortly before his death. CATALOGUE. The Numbers follow from left to right.
