He remained feveral Years confined in a Dungeon, till fuch Time as the Carthaginians thought of making Offers of Peace to Rome ; and, as a previous Step, fent over Am- bafladors to negociate an Exchange of Prifoners. To forward this Defign, Regnlus was difpatched with the AmbaiTadors. They ima- gined that a Man of his Weight would have a proper Influence in his own Country,, and that, in order to regain his Liberty, he fliould ftrenuoufty fecond their Propofals ; but in this they were greatly miftaken. Regulus, when admitted into the Roman Se- nate, made ufe of all his Eloquence to dilTuade them from agreeing to an Exchange of Prifoners ; in which having fucceeded, he im- mediately left the City, and, though fure cf being put to a cruel Death, returned to Carthage with the Ambaffadors. The Prayer* of the People who crowded about him, the Arguments of his Friends, the Tears and Entreaties of his virtuous Wife and lovely Children, who, in the greateft Agony of Diftrefs at the Thoughts of what he was to fuffer^ prefied him not to depart, could not make him break his Word. Conftant to hisPromife, he followed the Am- baiTadors, fhewing no more Concern than when in happier Times; having made up Differences among his Clients, he went to breathe a freer Air, and enjoy a peaceful Leifure at his Country- feat f . Had it lain in his Power, this Peace would not have iafted. From the Conclufion of.- it to his Death, he was entrufted with the Management of other Wars both in Afric and 1 Spain. Having happily terminated the former, and on the Point of crofting the Sea to engage in the latter, as he was offering a Sacri- fice to the Gods that they might profper*his Undertaking, his Son Hannibal, clinging about his Neck, preffed him wiih the Earneft- nefs fo remarkable in Children when they have flxt their Mind upon a favourite Object, to let him go over in this Expedition.
