Joshua Reynolds, son of the Rev. Samuel Reynolds, and of Theo- phila his wife, born at Plympton Earl, Devon. Educated by his father at the Plympton Grammar School 1735. Painted his first known portrait on a boat-sail on Cremyll Beach, Mount Edgcumbe, that of Parson Smart. 1740. Apprenticed to Thomas Hudson the por- traint painter. Arrived in London on October 13 th. 1742. Disagreed with Hudson ; left London and set up as portrait painter at Plymouth Dock, now Devonport. 1746. Death of Samuel Reynolds. Joshua joined by his two unmarried sisters at Plymouth Dock. 1749. Sailed with Commodore Augustus, after- wards Viscount, Keppel, in the " Centurion " for the Mediterranean. Landed at Minorca in August, where he painted the officers of the garrison. Accident in riding. Late in the year arrived at Rome ina Leghorn. 1750 52. Studied at Rome. At Venice. August 1 6th. Left Venice for England via Paris. October i6th. Arrived in London. 1753. Opened studio at 104, St. Martin's Lane. His house kept by his sister Frances. Later in the year removed to 5, Great Newport Street. Busily employed in portraiture from the first. Painted the Captain Keppel^ Lady A. Dazuson, etc. Made the acquaintance of Samuel Johnson. [760. Removed to 47, Leicester Fields, now Messrs. Puttick and Simpson's Auction Rooms, on the western side of Leicester Square, a long lease of which he bought. Exhibited at the first exhibition of the Incorporated Society of Artists in the Strand. 1 76 1. Painted Captain Orine^ Laurence Sterne^ Lady E, Keppel, etc. 1762. Lost the sight of the left eye quite suddenly whilst painting. July, August and September. Sought distraction by visits to Burke at Beacon sfield, to Arundel, Chichester, Petworth and Brighthelmstone. 1790. Misunderstanding with Sir William Cham- bers and certain of the Academicians; resigned the Presidentship. Later withdrew his resignation. December loth. Delivered his last address to the Academy. 1 7 91. Gradual failure of sight. 1792. February 23rd. Sir Joshua died at the age of 69, of a liver complaint. March 3rd.
