On tlio top of the centre hill is seen Pan, seated playing his pipe. On the left of the picture Narcissus and Echo are introduced. The former lies on the bank of a stream amid flowers, and the latter sits pensively on a rock behind him, with her arm over her head. A nymph in the centre, seated, is receiving the infant Bacchus, while a second, leaning on the shoulder of her companion, is turning round and apparently communi- cating the event to five other nymphs on the right, two of whom are wantoning in the cool stream, two more are seated on its margin in conversation, while the remaining one stands by looking on 47 in. by 70 in. A party con- sisting of seven huntsmen on foot and four on horseback, accompanied by a number of dogs, attacking a boar near the trunk of a fallen tree ; several of the dogs have seized the animal, and a party of men on foot armed with javelins, spears, / and a pitchfork oppose his progress ; one of the latter, in a yVfyi scarlet jacket, is clambering over the trunk of a tree, and / another is sounding a horn ; these are sec(mded in their efforts /UX 1^^ by two horsemen who are on the further side of the boar, and t /Z^^/ruiZun, ^^^ ^^ them is piercing it in the head with a sword ; two of r^f . their companions are galloping up from the left to the attack, /^ ^ and in the opposite side is a boy holding two dogs in a leash ; through an opening in the forest is seen a second party of gentlemen in the pursuit of wild boars. This splendid Ian Iscape exhibits on the left a lofty hill, on whose summit are two rustic houses backed by a cluster of beautiful trees ; the view is here bounded by l«)fty blue mountains, under shelter of which appear the indications of a hamlet, evinced by the tower of a church and the roofs of bouses rising above a wood ; the hill terminates on its weather side by precipitous rocks, against which flow large volumes of / water, vphich roll over a shelving bottom and regurgitate in ^7^//- foaming eddies along the front, girt in by a rocky bank on the right ; on this side the eye looks through an opening in the hills, over a valley in which is situate a small town, with a church and a windmill, and from thence to receding hills. On the left and close to the front is a broken beech tree, lying over the stream, its stump remaining in the ground ; beyond the latter object lies a heap of timber, and still more remote are two men in conversation, one of whom is seated. The soil is here sandy and the surface finely broken and varied, and the hill is, in p irfc, enclosed on either side by palings ; and from a little fissure at its side falls a tributary stream into the river. The general appearance is that of the evening of a fine day, the clouds being tinged with the warmth of the dejiarted luminary.
