AVERY’S COLLECTION OF AINTINGS BY FOREIC^N A RTISTS, TO BE SOLD BY AUCTION AT THE ©©BCTIIIMUUS mr ©M&II&V, 82 FIFTH AVENUE, l Corner Fourteenth Street , Tuesday and Wednesday Evenings, April 23d and 24th, 1872. II a LIBRARY M.KNOEOLER&GO. 2 9 556-8 Fifth Ave. New York V t- / CATALOGUE MstM&MM, Pi JLmrw COLLECTION OF BY CELEBRATED FOREIGN ARTISTS. Now on FREE EXHIBITION , day and Evening , at the e SOMERVILLE ART GALLERY, 82 Fifth Avenue, cor. of 14th St. UNTIL SOLD AT AUCTION ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY EVENINGS, APRIL 23d and 24th. Beginning at a quarter to eight each evening. R. SOMERVILLE, Auctioneer. 1872. CARD. Samuel P. Avery respectfully announces that he reluctantly offers, at public sale, his valuable stock of Paintings by foreign artists. De¬ layed by various causes, they arrived late in the season, the large number and size of many of them rendered it impossible to expose them in his small rooms, thus only a portion have been shown. To properly exhibit them, and to accommodate collectors from other cities ; also, to meet the expressed wishes of many persons who prefer to purchase at auction, they are hereby offered in that manner. This varied and interesting collection was only gathered by assid¬ uous search, during a visit of seven months at the art centers of Europe. The great majority of them were purchased directly from the artists, and a large proportion were painted expressly to my order, on commission, given immediately after the fall of the “ Commune/' since wjiich time, prices have materially advanced. A peculiar feature of this collection, is the number of works by young and rising artists, new to this market. As an illustration of the advantage to buyers in making such selec tions, I would state that during the past five years I sold to the late Mr. Alex. White, twenty-three of the paintings disposed of in his recent sale, and on which an average advance of over one hundred per cent, was realized. These works are presented in perfect order, in new frames of artistic and varied designs; they will be sold in that good faith which has on all former occasions gained the confidence of the public. Should there be any reservation, it will be expressly stated at the time of sale. Mr. Rossell has been engaged to deliver the purchases, free of charge.
