Educated at the Priory of St. Frideswide in Oxford, and in the Universities of France and Italy, he was the author of several works, of which the present is the most important. The intention was to recommend and illustrate the new and legitimate mode of versification which had then begun to flourish in Europe, in opposition to the Leonine or barbarous species. He also wrote a poem, in which he besought the Roman Emperor to liberate Richard Coeur-de-Lion. The present is a valuable and early codex of his work, and in addition has a most important commentary. tb painted /* 4 ^<457 Virgilii Opera, Baskerville's edition, ruled with red lines, old red morocco with borders of gold, the inside of the covers lined with red and blue leather and tooled in compartments, silk fly leaves Birminghamise, 175 is y 458 Virgilio, I Primi Quattro Libri dell’ Eneide, tradotti da G. A magnificent Italian Manuscript of the XVth Century, on 292 leaves of pure vellum (15^ by 10J inches), written in a clear round hand, with the commencement of many of the divisions and chapters of the work in capitals of burnished gold and ultramarine, as are also many of the other capitals throughout the volume. The first page presents a fine specimen of the Italian Art of Illumination. It is enclosed by a double border. The inner one is composed of white interlacing branches, intermingled with Cupids, birds and fish, the groundwork being of ultramarine, studded with white dots arranged in triangles. The outer border is richly foliated with gold, intermixed with Cupids, birds and other ornaments. In the centre of the border are two medallion portraits, finely drawn, and in the lower part is a coat-of-arms supported by angels. The groundwork of the larger Initial Letters is executed in the same interlaced style as the inner border of the first page, the letter itself being in burnished gold; as are also the Initial Letters throughout the work, though upon a painted ground of different colours, bound in red morocco, with joints, the back and sides covered with gold tooling in the Grolier style, by C. Lewis, from Dr. Hawtrey s collection A more, beautiful specimen of this peculiar style of Italian art can hardly be desired; independent of which there is a peculiar inteiest attached to the volume. It is evident from the circumstance ot a shield- of-arms occurring at the foot of the first page of most manuscripts executed about this period in Italy, that in many instances the dedica¬ tory inscription which accompanied it was destroyed. This manuscript, however, has a leaf preceding the first page, in the centre of which is a long inscription, on purple vellum, in capitals of gold enclosed wi in a circle, outside of which is the following, by which we learn by w jom and to whom the volume was dedicated: “Numini suo lllustrissimo et praecellenti Domino Antonello Aversano Ferdinand® Majes a is Secretario Max.
