Most of the books on Italian Villas that have been published are more especially devoted to romantic or his- orical anecdotes of the great villa-building churchly and princely families, or else devote themselves more especially to the gardens, which, though charming, are after all but a part of the complete villa or country estate. In Italy the coun- try villa has for centuries been used more as a place for rest, recreation and refreshment from the heat of the city than as an income producing landed estate and, accordingly, Italy is full of charming country houses, many of which are unknown to the writer of guide books or to the dealers in architectural photo- graphs. A large proportion of the cuts in this book consists of absolutely new ma- erial, for they show the Italian country estate of the Renaissance in all its parts, —house, garden, terracing, and the outlying podere or farm as well,—for it is in these smaller buildings, scattered in picturesque sites, always skilfully adapted to the surrounding landscape, that we find many admirable examples of small house architecture. Though this book consists largely of photographs and sketches of little snown villas, it contains, none the less, views and plans of some of the better known and frequently published ones, for it is believed that it will then make the best sort of reference book for the architect, and provide the best sort of inspira- tion for all those who have felt the enchantment of life on a country estate. ARCHITECTURAL BOOK PUBLISHING CO. SN EAST WrnesiREET, NEW YORKSCIT MORE SMALL ITALIAN VILLAS & FARM HOUSES SBy GUN LOW ERE HANDSOMELY BOUND IN BUCKRAM, GILT TOP, CONTAINING 140 PLATES, SIZE 12 x 16 INCHES, ALSO NUMEROUS TEXT ILLUSTRATIONS @ @ “Price, $25.00 net 23 y HIS new book, containing More Italian Villas and Farm Houses, is an A Z| important contribution to the study of the stately and inspiring Italian villas of the Renaissance, and the picturesque and charming small country houses and farm buildings of Italy, which are so full of suggestion to the builder of small country houses today. Many of the photographs are of buildings that have not been photographed before, either because they were too remote to be easily found, or because they had been undiscovered by the artist, while others are of buildings that unfortu- nately will never be photographed again because they have fallen into ruin or have been destroyed during the war. As such, the book is a valuable record of certain interesting phases of Italy’s art. It was a fortunate opportunity that led Mr. Lowell, after he had published his first collection of Italian country houses, to be sent there during the war as the director of the Department of Military Affairs of the American Red Cross, since during the year that he was there, he had endless opportunities to see so much that had previously been invisible to the traveller or the student. The result is a book that is not only of unusual value to the student of Architecture, and especially to those who are interested in the Palladian villas that inspired the architecture of Inigo Jones and of Christopher Wren in the 17th Century and in turn, our own Colonial architecture in America, but on account of the picturesqueness of the buildings and the pictorial beauty of many scenes, will be found full of suggestion to scene painters, artists and cinema producers as well.
