A CONCORDANCE TO THE HOLY SCRIPTURES OF THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS. BY REV. GEORGE COLES. Tho best of all helps are helps in the best thins*. Cotton NRiD~£)0rk: PUBLISHED BY CARLTON & PHILLIPS, 2 c o mulberry-street. 1856. Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1817, by G. LANE & C. B. TIPPETT, In the Clerk’s Office of the District Court of the Southern District of New-York. PREFACE. One of the most valuable helps to the study of the Bible is a good Concordance. Com¬ mentaries are intended to explain and illustrate the meaning of the sacred oracles; Dictionaries are designed to show the meaning of particular words, names, and terms; while it is the proper business of a Concordance to refer the reader to the book, chapter, and verse where the pas¬ sage sought for is to be found. Ministers are often asked, “ Is there any such text as this in the Bible: As death leaves us judgment will find us ?” The fact is, there is no such text. That which probably gave rise to the question is the following: Ecc. xi, 3, “ If the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth there it shall be.” The first Concordance of which we have any account was made by Antony of Padua, some time in the twelfth century. It was formed for 4 PREFACE. the Latin Yulgate, and entitled Concordantice Morales. But, if we follow the authority of Cruden and Townley, Cardinal Hugo, in the year 1244, was the first entitled to this honour. All agree that the cardinal employed five hun¬ dred monks to assist him in his arduous labours. The first English Concordance of the whole Bible was compiled by John Marbeck in 1550, of which an interesting account may be seen in Townley’s Illustrations of Biblical Literature, vol. ii, p. 270, Book Boom edition. The next, in order of time, seems to have been made by Clement Cotton, about two hundred and ten years ago. As a Concordance, the work of Cotton is very full and complete; but it has nothing of the Dictionary in it, which occupies so large a space in the work of Cruden. The work of Alexander Cruden is too well known to need a description of it here. The first edi¬ tion of this work was published in 1737. In matters of science Cruden was not so well in¬ formed as his successors, which makes the Dic¬ tionary part of his work of comparatively little use at the present day. Butterworth’s Con¬ cordance, in point of magnitude and utility, is next in importance to that of Cruden. It is a very valuable work, but too large for the pocket. The late Thomas Taylor also published a Con¬ cordance, which, on account of its convenient PREFACE. 5 size and moderate price, has often been recom¬ mended to public notice. On many accounts this is a useful work; but many of his defini¬ tions and explanations are so exceedingly mi¬ nute, and take up so much room in the body of the work, that they necessarily exclude a great many important references. For example, un¬ der the letter /, the author has inserted eighteen lines of explanation, showing that this important pronoun has no less than eight different accept¬ ations in Scripture. The work of good old John Brown, of Haddington, commonly called “ Brown’s Concordance,” is so limited in its range as often to disappoint the expectation of the student. In view of all these circum¬ stances, the subscriber, from a full persuasion that something of the kind was wanted, began, about four years since, to compile the present work upon a plan entirely new, as will be seen by comparing it with all previous ones. The amount of labour bestowed upon it has been very considerable, and the greatest possible care has been taken to have every reference correct. That the work is free from faults of every kind, the compiler dare not presume to gay. A multitude of other duties required his attention while it was passing through his hands. If, however, it 'shall prove to be the case that he has rendered the least of God’s 6 PREFACE. children an acceptable service in the study of the sacred books, he will exceedingly rejoice. In the full belief that while, as Dr. Johnson remarks, “ every other author may aspire to praise, the lexicographer [and of course the Concordance-maker] can only hope to escape reproach,” he commits the work to all lovers of the Bible, and subscribes himself their friend and well-wisher, New-York, Feb. 12 , 1847.
