A woman fcouring Kettles, a richly coloured and high finifhed Cabinet Piddure. The Mouth of the Harbour of Scheveling with VelTels putting out to Sea, and Figures in various Employ- ments on the Beach : a capital and pcrfedl Pidbure of this efleemed Mafler. Vievv of a town in Holland, with Buildings, and Figures; a Surgeon’s Shop 'alfo humoroufly intro- duced on one Side of the Pidlure. For tranfparency and brilliant Effedl, and height of finifliing, this exquifite Bijou may rank among the choiceft Performances of the Mafter. View of a Road leading through a Village, a ruilic Scene, beautifully painted after Nature ; a charm- ing Chef d’oeuvre. THE DOCTOR. This exquifite Cabinet Piebure, and the fol- lowing, its Companion, are well known by the En- gravings taken from them. This Artift, who could fo difpofe his Light and Shade, as to illumine what was grand, and conceal what might be difpleafing, has here difplayed the Magic of his Art, with fingular Effedl : Truly Capital. 72 A Magdalen ; full of Delicacy and Sweetnefs: this charming Picture, is engraved in the Schola Italica. 73 A Repofo of a Holy Family, St. Jofeph and St. John in Egypt : a compofition, that, for grandeur, might have done honour to Pouflin ; painted in a firm and bold Style, and the Characters full of expref- fion 74 An Italian Landfcape, with Buildings and Figures ; a cool evening Scene, painted with great Delicacy of Pencil 75 The Holy Family, with St. Jofeph and St. John, full pleafing Exprellion ; this capital Pidlure of the favorite Mafter once graced the colledlion of Sir Laurence Dundas 76 THE PRESENTATION of the VIRGIN. The Proceffion of Elders to the Temple in this Pidlure is uncommonly grand ; the Characters full of noble Exprellion, and painted in a vigorous Style. This Chef d’oeuvre of the German Raphael, and it’s Companion, were formerly brought to Italy by Chriflina, Queen of Sweden, but, were not long fince purchafed from out of the Bracciano Palace at Rome 77 THE CIRCUMCISION, it’s Companion, equally capital 78 THE DEATH of SOCRATES. The fubjeCt, and the Perfon of Socrates in particular, is treated with proper, Dignity ; the reflected Prifon-light through dark, is natural. This is a curious and Angularly fine Specimen of this very celebrated Mafler’s Talent in Hiftorical Painting 79 LUCRETIA. One of the fineft Specimens of this great Mafler, in his beft Style, and in perfeCl Prefervation : from the collection of M. Le Rouge I 7 ] 8o BANDITTI on the BANK of a RIVER ; a grand and rocky Scene. This noble Picture and the following, were purchafed from the Colonna Palace at Rome: the figures are corre£lly drawn, and finifhed with uncommon precifion and fmartnefs of pencil : The whole painted in a tranfparent and harmonious Tone of Colour, in the very fineft Style and Time of the Mafter — truly a chef d' osuvre 81 St. FRANCIS PREACHING, the Companion, equally capital 82 DEIANIRA and the CENTAUR, purfued hy HERCULES. A capital Picture, equal in colour to Titian ; and in compofltion worthy of Annibale Carracci i in the fineft prefervation. It was formerly in the Poffeftion of a Noble Duke, whofe Tafte and loutherbourg ditto Judgement were well known 83 A COTTAGE, in a rocky and woody Scene, after Sun-fet : A beautiful View, admirably fuited to the luxuriant Fancy which diftinguifhes this great and admired Artift, and treated in his very beft Style. This Piaure is rendered further interefting from being a faithful portrait of Welfti Scenery 84 A MOUNTAINOUS and ROCKY LANDSCAPE, a View in Wales. A Scene full of grandeur and managed with DITTO 85 HOGARTH 86 furprifing Genius and Effeft. A STORM and SHIPWRECK, with banditti and figures. One of the nobleft Efforts of the Genius and Talents of the truly great and admired Mafter. THE EIGHT ORIGINAL PICTURES, ever celebrated as chef d'ceuvres of HOGARTH ; and well known by the title of THE RAKE s PRO- GRESS. Hogarth, well acquainted with all the Viclffi- tudesof Life, and perfedly Mafter of the Paftions, has immortalized himfelf by con-cding the Failings [ S ] of his Countrymen. Thefc inimitable Produaions of his Pencil might alone have eftablifhed his Fame. They prefent moft interefting and afFeding Scenes, in which he has difplayed all the Powers of his Art, by Charader, Compofition, Defign and Effed^ and in which even his Colouring partakes of the- poetical Spirit of the Painter: not too gay or ledudive in the Scenes of Dillipation, and keeping fober Pace with the melancholy Tone of thofe, which conclude this admirably treated Subjed.
