Norman T. A Munder & Co. Baltimore. Printers The Moss Photo-Engraring Co New York, Plate Maker* FOREWORD his volume contains details of Tuscan architecture that have either not been published hitherto, or else published only in monumental works, some of which are out of print and virtu¬ ally unobtainable, while all of them are more or less difficult of access to the average architect. We have endeavoured to make the book as comprehensive as possible in the range of subjects chosen for presentation in order that its usefulness may cover a wide field. We have endeavoured also to select subjects replete with suggestive value and suitable for a diversity of applications. Most of all, we have striven for absolute exactitude and fidelity of presentment so that the exquisite subtlety of all the details may be preserved. Not only are the meas¬ ured drawings given, so that the physical actuality of each subject may be grasped, but likewise half-tone illustrations which convey the spirit of the work and the ensemble of its environment. We have included a number of homely items such as the measurements of flooring bricks and how they are laid, or the dimensions of roofing tiles and the manner of their hanging, items devoid, perhaps, of spectacular appeal but valuable for their intimate constructional interest. Information upon such points as these the architect seeks for in vain in the monumental works. Along with these minor but exceedingly important matters are included sundry measurements of rustication the treatment of farmhouse and villa chimneys, and exact schemes of the painting of beamed ceilings. The plates speak sufficiently for themselves so that further introduction is unnecessary. It remains only to acknowledge with deep appreciation the cour¬ tesy of those who, in various ways, have facilitated our work. Thanks are espe¬ cially due to Commendatore Dr. Guido Biagi, the Librarian of the Laurentian Library in Florence; to the owner of the Villa Palmieri and the Villetta, at San Domenico, near Florence; to the authorities at Santa Croce and Ogni Sand; to the Donna Anna de’ Marchesi Antinori; to Count Rasponi; to Charles Eyre, Esquire; to Cecil Pinsent, Esquire, and to Dr. Aldo Olschki. It would be ungracious not to record here also our warm appreciation of the many little acts of spontaneous kindness and service rendered by humbler folk, espe¬ cially Domenico, at the Villa Palmieri, and the portiere at San Lorenzo.
