ADVERTISEMENT, When Pictures of the quality described in this Cata¬ logue are presented before the public eye, it seems needless to say any thing in their favor: but the pre¬ judice that is frequently entertained against works of art, because they are separated from a Collection, and therefore supposed to be no longer worthy of continuing a part, renders it necessary to appeal to Public judge¬ ment against ill-grounded opinions, should such be formed. The Pictures now offered for sale are not the weed- ings of inferior performances, but the separating of over¬ abundant specimens of the same Masters’ works, of very considerable merit as well as value, in order to make room for other purchases and a more extended variety : and that this is the fact, requires, it is respectfully remarked, no other explanation than a view of the Pictures themselves.
