Gold background with landscape of rocky country. The painting was exhibited in the Loan Exhibition of Italian Primitives, 1917, where it received the following notice: “These two panels were evidently painted by Allegretto Nuzi at a period when his memories of Oreagna’s bottega had not yet completely faded away. Particularly, the bright color scheme with luminous red, blue, orange and violet tones betrays the connection with the art of Orcagna and Nardo di Cione, yet the drawing of the figures, their elongated types with big almond-shaped eyes and curved noses, as well as the general execution, point to a rather mature period in Allegretto’s vareer, that is, after 1365.” Panel. TWO IMPORTANT RUGS LOTS 491-492 IMPORTANT DRAGON RUG = armenia, 15TH CENTURY This group of rugs has of late attracted considerable attention —not only on account of their historic interest, but also for the sake of their monumental beauty. Attention was first attracted to them by Martin in his History of Oriental Carpets. He alled these rugs “Armenian” on account of Armenian inserip- tions which are found on some of them. Their relation to the Caucasian Kuba rugs is evident. Concerning the dates of these rugs, we have two interesting facts. ‘There is a rug, ancestor of this type, in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin, the pat- tern of which is exactly duplicated by a rug depicted on a fresco by Domenico di Bartolo, 1440 A. D. Some of these rugs can therefore be proved to be of the fif- teenth century. Other rugs of this type have elaborate and characteristic 17th century borders. One rug bears an Ar- menian date 1684. We have therefore a range of about 250 years for this family of rugs. While in the Berlin rug the com- position is set in octagons, and the motif of the fight between the dragon and the pheenix is absolutely clear, all the other rugs have a very indistinct design and the composition is set into lozenges, recalling the composition of a group of Persian “vase” rugs, which belong to the 16th century. Generally the rugs with very simple borders are assigned to the 15th or early 16th century. Martin’s ascription to the 13th century has generally been abandoned. The most interesting specimens of this type of dragon rug are very rare. The finest of them, closely re- lated in design to the present specimen, was formerly in the col- lection of Theodore Graf in Vienna and is now in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin, which also possesses another less important one. The South Kensington Museum owns two fine specimens of the same family. Others are in the collection of Van Stolk in the Hague and Lamm in Naesby, Sweden, and of Mr. Weise in Constantinople. While the public museums in this country have not yet a single specimen of this type of rug, the great private collections include several specimens. Mr. MecUhenny, Mr. James F. Ballard, Mr. Williams of Norris- town, Mr. Sharples in Westchester, have them. There are sev- eral motives in the lozenges of these rugs:—first, a central tree with rampant animals, a motif borrowed from Egyptian textiles of the fourteenth century. (See Falke, Seidenweberei, Figs. 80 361, 362, 364, 365.) Second, a group of two fighting animals which are almost interlaced, the same motif which is often found on the animal rugs. Third, the motif of a single dragon. Fourth, the dragon fighting with the phoenix. Fifth, a large peony flower, sixth, a tree with birds on either side, also an old I textile motif. The dragon motives are of course borrowed from China, a fact not surprising if we consider the big wave of Chi- | nese influence since the Mongol conquest. |) The present rug belongs to the early history of this group on account of its simple border and its bold design. ‘The border shows blue S-shaped motives on cream-white ground, alter- nating with red and yellow rosaces and small dark leaves. The centre field is red. The lozenges are formed by bold cream- white, light tan and deep green serrated leaves, covered with flower-shrub design with swaying birds. Very interesting is the oecurrence of the Chinese ying yang, or symbol of generation, which is repeated eight times on the rug. The lozenges show in repetition the following motives: (1) The centre lozenge with two running aninials, large peonies in the two outside ones. (2) The dragons, strangely conventionalized, these two lozenges framed by one large peony and two rosaces. After this, repeti- tion of the first row, but the animal group twice, and the peony once, in the middle. ‘The fourth row corresponds to the second. row, but shows two fighting animals instead of the dragon. The fifth row repeats the first row. The sixth repeats the second, and the seventh row repeats the third row. If we examine all the specimens which have come to our knowledge, the present one seems to be closest in relation to the famous Graf rug, which remains the star piece of this series. Width, 7 feet 11 inches; length, 17 feet 10 inches [SEE ILLUSTRATION | 492, IMPORTANT “SALAMANCA” RUG spain, aBout 1500 A very interesting specimen, in a color combination and weave characteristic of Spain. Not the entire rug has been preserved. The border consisted of a pattern which was an undulated stem with peony flowers pointing alternatingly upward and down- | ward. This undulated stem has been transformed into a broken | ¥ yb : Ime which in the vertical parts takes the shape of columns, a | motif of the Spanish coat of arms, and also vaguely reminiscent | of the shafts of Cufic lettering frequent in Spanish rug borders. p. ? . Green and white design on red ground. The design of the field of the rug is also green outlined by white, on deep red ground. 82 It consists of a repetition of motives which could be outlined by a lozenge. Each of these motives shows four shafts, issuing from a central rosace. The four corners between the shafts are filled by boldly conventionalized arabesque leaves, as we see them on Spanish textiles of the late 15th century. See Falke, ‘““Seiden- weberei,” Figs. 381, 383, 374. All the upright shafts end in fleur-de-lys motives, while the horizontal shafts end in large con- ventionalized peony flowers. Such flowers occur frequently in Spanish textiles and rugs. The following rug types of Spanish rugs are known:— (1) Rugs with small all-over tile patterns with large coat of arms in the centre. The large Williams rug in the Metropolitan Museum. (2) Rugs with six or eight star octagons of Moorish style. Specimens in the Metropolitan and Boston Museums and in the South Kensington Museum. (3) Rugs reflecting textile patterns. The Spanish weaves of the 15th century show a strange mixture of Mohammadan and Italian motives. So do the rugs. Generally the rugs interpreting textile motives show a firm system of lozenges into which peony flowers are set. Specimens in the Williams Collection; a very fine one in the Cleveland Museum. The present specimen seems to us unique, having no lozenges around the flower motives. It is very difficult to say whether rugs of this type are of Moorish or Christian origin, while group (4) with distinct Renaissance wreaths is of course later in the sixteenth century and follows strict Italian Renais- sance designs.
