PHILADELPHIA No. 233 Preface. Mr. Stevenson’s reputation as a Collector 1s so well established and his kindly personality so pleasantly remembered, that we feel his own words may be quoted to show his deep interest in his collection, which precluded his retaining therein any but authentic specimens. A few years ago, Sir Guy Laking, Armorer to King Edward VII, and one of the best English authorities on Arms and Armor, during a visit to this country, examined this collection, and any piece the authenticity of which was questioned, was immediately disposed of by Mr. Stevenson. As an essayist on Arms and Armor bis deductions were both historic and scientific. To quote from one of bis introductions :— “The history of ancient arms and armor is a subject interesting alike to the Antiquarian, the Historian, and the Painter. To the Collector 1t has an intense fascination.” “To trace from the earliest period the various changes and’ modifications in Armor or the evolution of any particular weapon: 1s to trace the history of the people to whom 1t belonged, for it has been said that the history of man could be written in his arms if they had been preserved in an unbroken series 1n all their infinite varieties. Hence its interest to the Antiquarian and Historian. To the Painter what 1s more. necessary than the knowledge which enables him to fix at a glance the period to which any particular piece of armor, or weapon belongs ?”’ This sale affords a rare opportunity of securing many unusual pieces and should immediately attract the attention of Collectors whose chances are decreasing with every decade, since authentic pieces are being acquired and held as lasting. memorials by the museums of the world.
