OF REICHARD Co.’S COL- Vr LECTION BEGUN. \ The sale of Reichard & Co.’s collection of modern paintings began last night at Chickering Hall. ta There was no unseemly scramble for the pictures. \ People did not tumble over each other in their’ tet eagerness to bid, as they did earlier in the day i when a hundred millions or so of Government bonds were got rid of ata premium in twenty-two minutes, ah with demands for ten times as much more. The ‘picture market is keeping company with cotton in values, and a restriction of the acreage of canvas might not be unwise. At any rate, one would think that persons with big collections to sell would seek a more favorable time than the present, when loss } is almost inevitable. { The sale last night was decidedly uneven in re-' sults. When a Daubigny, 1042x1742 inches in size, brings $1,250, and a Detaille watercolor, 714x4%4 inches, brings $215, it.is impossible to write the sale down as even approaching a failure. Yet the total returns for eighty-five pictures were only $25, 890, an average of about $304. Comparison show that the executor of the late George Inness shou] feel gratified at the handsome average maintaine at the three nights’ sale of his paintings last week | The highest price paid last night was $1,525 fon B 4 a Troyon, 1214x1846. Two years ago two examples Ga. wore by this master were sold at Chickering Hall for- i - $23,000 and $18,000 respectively. But there are Troyons and Troyons, and at that time, too, Mr. Cleveland was not President of the United States. Corot’s “Morning at the Pond”’ (12x16) at $1,100, and A) Schreyer’s ‘Arabs’? (18x23) at $1,025 were also in ‘ee the highest range: of prices. _ Admirers of American art have not reason for in- tense gratification at the showing made last night. For H. Bolton Jones’s ‘‘Summer’ (24x36) $30 was paid, and W. T. Dannat’s ‘‘La Chocolatiere”’ (19x12) fetched the same price. Other Ameriéans repre-+ sented were Charles M. Dewey, Charles H. Davis, Howard Helmick, James M. Hard, D. B. F. Has- brouk, . William -M. Chase,. Carleton Wiggins, Arthur, Parton, R. C. Minor, A. H. “Wyant, J. Francis Murphy and. The figure of the sower moves across the foreground, scattering seed in the furrows of a newly ploughed field. The white walls of a farm- house are seen in the middle ground. The atmosphere suggests the chill of early spring, and the picture gives forcible expression to the sentiment of subject and of season. Signed at the right. ROBERT SOMERVILLE ORTGIES & CO.
