The ceiling is simply but strongly built of heavy joists, with- out any elaboration, while the whitewashed walls are innocent of any ornament save two pictures over the fireplace and the door. The well-worn towpath is empty, save for the figure of a solitary man, clad in the costume characteristic of the Dutch peasantry, while to either bank is moored one of the flat-bottomed boats typical of all fenland districts. A large windmill on the right of the picture is a prominent feature of the middle distance, but, with the exception of this, two pollard willows and a few cattle are the only relief to the flat monotony of fenland meadows, until the eye reaches the far-off ho- rizon, which is bounded by dense foliage, showing blue in the distance.
