The iron loop on the muzzle engages the lever, which accompanies the cross- bow. Rarely found complete. HARPERS FERRY TAPE-LOCK MUSKET (1859). The scarce Navy model, fitted with sword bayonet, which is missing. RARE POACHER’S KENTUCKY FLINT-LOCK RIFLE. Length 51 inches. Full length very beautiful curly maple stock. 7 en- craved silver escutcheons (one missing). Brass mounted. Very elaborate and large patch-box, prettily engraved. Raised cheek piece with engraved silver crnament. Checked grip. The un- usual feature is that the barrel is a “take down” and the fore- stock is divided in front of the trigger guard so that the piece can be quickly taken apart and concealed on the person. The stock has been split around the lock and crudely repaired by brass plates. It is such a rare piece, however, that it would more than pay to restore it, although it is not really neces- sary. RARE XVII. CENTURY JAPANESE MATCH-LOCK GUN. Length 44 inches. Heavy octagon barrel, with unusually large flaring muzzle. Barrel bears Kiri crest indicating it belonged to the nobility. Besides this crest there are numerous dragons and other ornamental designs in silver and gold bronze on the barrel, also silver inlay on the match holder. A very desirable and genuine old piece showing nine proof marks. SHARP’S PERCUSSION BREECH-LOADING BUFFALO RIFLE. 25-inch heavy octagon barrel, calibre .38. Double set triggers, iron patch-box. One of the early models of this celebrated ritle. EARLY FLINT-LOCK BRASS BARRELLED BLUNDER-BUS. Length 30 inches. Cannon barrel, with 1'4-inch bell muzzle. Very old piece, probably made before 1700. Wood split in two places on the forestock and part of back strap on hammer broken, but, considering its age, it is in good order and com- plete. MOORISH MIGUELET LOCK HORSEMAN’S GUN. Length 638 inches. The barrel is held to the stock by nine embossed brass capucines. Crutch-shaped stock. Fitted with a genuine migue- Jet lock not often found, and a very old piece, yet well pre- served. BRIDESBURG U. S. MUSKET, with Milbank’s alteration te breech-loader. A rare piece. Bayonet missing. VOLCANIC MAGAZINE RIFLE. 25-inch barrel. Patent of 1854, and forerunner of the Winchester rifle. Very scarce. RAJPOOT KATAR. Length 16 inches. RAJPOOT KATAR. Another, similar. Length 1314 inches. (See plate 3.) INDIAN BEHEADING SWORD. Length 2144 inches. The blade is engraved each side at the end in floral design, and the back has half-inch engraved border each side. ‘The left side at the base shows 314-inch figure of a king, while the right side has a relief silver figure of a warrior. The grip is covered with raised carving. On the blade are 17 copper inserts. An extra nice piece. (See plate 1.) 15 94. 96. 98. 39° REMINGTON NAVY PISTOL. Calibre .50, center fire. Special hand-made curly walnut fore-end and similar large grip. Nicely reblued and perfect barrel. UNUSUAL JAPANESE LONG MATCH-LOCK PISTOL. Length 39 inches. Octagon barrel with flaring muzzle, and bears silver’ crest. UNIQUE PEPPERBOX. 4 shots, calibre .32. Made by C. S. Shat- tuck. But few were made about twenty years ago, and they are now rarely found. New condition. (See Plate 6) PERSIAN SCIMETAR. Length 32 inches. Leather scabbard, brass bound. A genuine and very old piece. (See plate 2:) PERSIAN SCIMETAR. Another. Length 38 inches. Gold dama- scene on each side of base for three inches. The grip, quillons and the two swivel bands are similarly ornamented. Leather scabbard. (See plate 4.) FINE ITALIAN FLINT-LOCK HUNTING SIDE ARM. Length 1914 inches. Tapering barrel profusely ornamented with silver inlay of various designs. The tang is similarly decorated. Chiselled fancy iron mounts. Very fine, hand-made lock cov- ered with engraving, showing deer, hunter and dog and folia- tion. The hammer is also engraved. Fancy pierced iron side plate. Fancy design silver name plate. Heavy butt with metal cap. The stock is of most beautiful mottled walnut with carved ‘relief rosettes and borders around the mountings. An excep- tionally choice piece, in perfect condition and made before 1700. Ramrod missing. (See plate 6.) 100. | ANCIENT SARDINIAN GUN. Length 60 inches. Miguelet lock. Stock is of ebony and bound with iron in filigree and chiselled design. Rare type of arm. Preserved in fine, highly polished rosewood case, with brass name plate, plush- lined, with Colt double bullet mould, fine copper powder flask, bullets, combination nipple wrench and screw driver, and two boxes of caps. This piece dates back to about 1842 and received its name from a knife made from a file by Resin P. Bowie and used by his brother, Colonel James Bowie, in a duel near Natchez, Miss. The forestock is carved in relief in very pretty floral and other designs. Wooden trigger guard with silver brace. The woodwork around the tang is also nicely carved in relief, and the two side plates are of silver in fancy design. There is also a fancy silver comb plate and silver butt. This has been altered from flint-lock and it now has a dolphin hammer and a fluted lug. The piece shows the highest quality of workmanship, and is of graceful design. — (See plate 7.) 27 173. The two thimbles are of fancy design and are silver. The rear one is carved to represent a grotesque man’s head. he trigger guard is of silver, hand chiseled, with engraved acorn. ‘I'he stock is of very fine highly polished mottled walnut. there is exquisite floral carving ahead of the trigger guard, each side of which is checked in panel. The carving around the comb is also exquisite, and the carving extends well down the stock. The side plate is silver, also engraved. There is a very pretty silver name plate engraved in fancy design surmounted by acrown. The butt cap is of solid silver, very heavy, and the finial shows a lion’s head in relief. A very beautiful pistol, in perfect condition except that a small piece of wood is chipped out side of the stock near the butt cap. One of the finest pis- tols that has passed through our hands. The stock is covered with mother-of-pearl inlay of various designs, and the butt has an engraved brass band. A few of the pieces of mother-of-pearl are missing, but this is a genuine and very old piece. The stock is split on the right side in places and the ramrod is missing, but it is sufficiently well preserved to be a valuable addition to any collection. 179. ARABIAN FLINT-LOCK HORSEMAN’S GUN. Length 51 inches. Slender barrel, octagonal at the breech. The lower part of the stock from the butt and for 18 inches ahead of the trigger guard is ornamented with brass partly engraved and partly pierced. This ornamentation on the top and the lower butt is engraved in pierced design, and there is a heavy engraved brass cap cn the butt. Octagonal barrel inlaid in various designs with silver at the breech and at the muzzle. Heavily rifled. Slightly belled muzzle. A very unusual feature about the guard is that it is made in two sections and when being carried on horseback can be closed up, and when used in service the guards can be separated, making a guard for the hand. Made from cocoanut and finely carved, showing two women’s heads, one man’s head and Jarge urn with flowers. These decorations are in panels surmounted by foliated carving. LOT. Oriental beaded tobacco bag and three (3) oriental beaded tobacco boxes, two of horn, one of wood with silver carrying chains. Fine. COLT PERCUSSION REVOLVING MUSKET. Cailbre .56. 5- shot fluted cylinder. Repaired at the grip (hardly shows), otherwise fine. No bayonet. LOT. Oriental carved wooden paddle-shaped piece. Length 32 inches. Pumpkin pipe (Chinese). Period 1750. POLYNESIAN CEREMONY STICK. Length 31 inches. Of carved wood. WAR CLUB. Length 22 inches. Heavy brass head. Finely carved ‘man’s head on other end. Rare piece. (See plate 8.) NATIONAL DERINGER. Calibre .41. Silver-plated barrel and frame, with some engraving. Checked rosewood grips. Very good condition. ALGERIAN CHIEF’S FLINT-LOCK HOLSTER PISTOL. Length 13 inches. The barrel is fluted for 214 inches at the breech. Slightly belled muzzle. The stock is of a very pretty walnut, carved in relief to represent a ramrod. This is set with silver wire, and the forestock and grip are checked in panel each side. Lock and hammer are nicely engraved. There are two side plates of engraved brass. Brass capped butt in shell design. Around the tang and the comb the piece is covered with silver wire inlay. Engraved brass trigger guard. This is really a high quality pistol and rarely found so good and in this small size. JAVANESE KNIFE. Length 16% inches. Carved horn grip (chipped on finial). Native wood scabbard, rattan bound, with fine relief carved floral ornament. JAPANESE TWO-HANDED LONG SWORD: SIGNED. L. 42. Sharkskin and leather hilt, with bronze inlaid cap, fine steel blade with double blood-drip channels; iron guard with relief of wild duck in the reeds. Crushed leather scabbard. UNusvt- ALLY FINE SIGNED PIECE. UNUSUALLY FINE SIGNED SILVER MOUNTED JAPANESE SHORT SWORD. L. 18 ins. Bevelled edge blade of fine steel with blood-drip channel, polished lacquer scabbard, with silver hilt, carved and inlaid with fisherman, plum-tree, and birds feeding in the rice. Lacks the short knife and the scabbard is a little chipped, otherwise A VERY FINE SIGNED EXAMPLE. CARVED IVORY SWORD. L. 32. Bevelled blade, fine gold bronze hilt incised and inlaid with a sharskin panel on which is mounted a bronze ornament, bronze tip similar, and the bronze cap with relief floral medallion; the bands are orna- mented with sentoku bronze, the bronze guard is pierced as a war chariot wheel; and the scabbard is of iridescent mosaic lacquer (loop-holder missing). JAPANESE DAGGER WITH KIRI CREST. L. 14 ins. Fine blade slightly shaped to a curve, bronze scabbard, with 8 medal- lions in gold bronze of the Kiri Crest (a sign of Japanese No- bility). JAPANESE SHORT SWORD OF FINE STEEL, L. 19 ins. Wrapped sharkskin hilt, inlaid bronze dragon tip and menuki; Copper hilt for short knife of moon and pine in relief. JAPANESE SHORT SWORD. L. 20 ins. Sharkskin hilt, wrapped, short knife wiih bronze handle; lacquer scabbard, rubbed. FOUR WOODEN SPEAR HEADS, with carved flat shafts of dark wood. In a primitive pattern, rubbed in with white, probably Abyssinian. L. 22 ins. and shorter. FIVE WOODEN SPEAR HEADS. Similar, one having hollowed rounded shaft for mounting on a pole. (5) THREE HEAVY BRONZE 16TH CENTURY NET WEIGHTS. Globular form with set ring tops, one large and two smaller. (3) Would make fine door steps. PAIR ROUND BRASS BREAST PLATE ORNAMENTS. Diam. 5 ins. Relief design in bands and centre medallion of formal floral pattern. A ring on the edge of one and a hook on the other give the necessary play for use; there have apparently been iron flat straps across inside with brass nails, but these are missing. A good sword but the scab- bard of lacquer with red Cherry crests has been abused; the hilt cap is missing, but the piece is worth consideration on account of the beauty of the carving of the band of ivory in horses (very tiny yet perfect) ; gourds, lattice, ete.; and the unusually fine menuki which are of shibuichi and shakudo.
