WILLIAM MACBETH 450 FIFTH AVENUE NEW YORK | Paintings by American Artists February 29, 1916 The pictures consisting of the Old Masters which are here catalogued as my property are part of a collection purchased by me in Holland in 1895. The forming of the collection was the life work of a well- known resident of The Hague, M. Muijser. In his old age he decided to part with his pictures, but could not be induced to separate them,—hence the inclusion of some of minor importance. A few of the pictures were sold soon after their arrival in New York, but the constantly increasing interest in American pictures, my long-time specialty, held my attention in that direction so steadily that I simply put the Old Masters aside, postponing any exhibition of them from year to year. Having decided not to store them any longer, they have now been placed in the hands of The Anderson Galleries for sale, wholly without reserve of any kind. The authenticity of many has been well established by com- petent authorities, among them Dr. Hofstede de Groot, whose written opinion will accompany several canvases. For several I have not retained the former owner’s definite attributions, merely leaving the “attributed” name as a basis for local critics’ investi- gation and decision. (Signed) WILLIAM MACBETH. The following original opinion signed by A. Chatain accompanies this picture: “This sketch possesses evidence of being an original in design and conception, and in brush work, compo- sition and style is forcibly in the manner of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. However in tonality, color selectioa, color harmony, and types of figures, are missing char- acteristics compared with other authentic pictures by G. B. Tiepolo. On account of these missing points I do not guarantee this picture, but in my opinion there is sufficient evidence to acxnowledge it as an original by G. B. Tiepolo.” P. The battle is the classic one wherein King Theseus and Queen Thalestris commanding the Amazons meet on the bridge of Thermodon. Theseus, mounted on a plunging horse, closely attended by his followers, is about to cast his javelin at the Amazons, who are turn- ing in flight at the other end of the bridge. Many have fallen from the bridge or are struggling in the water below. Canvas. Height, 24 inches; width, 55 inches. This picture is believed to have been painted about 1619, and is the preliminary sketch for the painting now in -the Munich Gallery. The latter has been changed both in perspective of the bridge and in many of the figure arrangements, as well as in the shape and size of the canvas. It was the opinion of the late Henry Mosler that this sketch was more spirited in action and more spontaneous in expression, and gave a much better idea of the force and movement of the battle than the completed picture. MARCH WEATHER. An atmospheric masterpiece by the “first American Impressionist.” The wetness and the sogginess of the fields, just at the breaking up of winter, with patches of snow still lingering, are inimitably presented; an abandoned field has here and there a stunted cedar. Mi- nutely painted, it reproduces faithfully the cool, clear shadows and the limpidity of a trout stream overhung with rocks and trees. The pearl-grey tones of the rocks are typical of Wyant. The burst of sunshine on the trout stream in the distance furnishes a centre for the composition. 3 Canvas. Signed and dated, 1860. Height, 16 inches; width, 20 inches. RALPH A. BLAKELOCK American, 1847- 175 INDIAN BURIAL. This picture is a beautiful golden brown example of the artist’s last and broadest manner. The landscape is seen in a warm summer twilight, and the deep golden and brown sky throws its rich glow over the mountain- side, covered with vines and brambles, and helps to give a romantic and spiritual charm to the weird Indian ceremony depicted. In a tree at the right, standing apparently on the side of a declivity, is a rude Indian coffin; at the foot of the tree are three Indians, while at the left, silhouetted against the dying sky another Indian stands with arm upraised, while further to the left is still another. The picture illustrates the following passage of Exo- dus XVII-8-18. 8. Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim. 9. And Moses said unto Joshua: choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek; tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill, with the rod of God in mine hand. 10. So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek, and Moses, Amron and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11. And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hands a ae a“ that Israel prevailed, and when he let down his hands Amalek prevailed. 12. But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon, and Amron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one at the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going -down of the sun. 13. And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. Canvas. Signed at the right, on the saddle of the horse; dated 1856. Height, 21 inches; midth, 80 inches.
