CATALOGUE The whole of the following lots, viz. : 1 to 89, are—with the exception of two mezzotints (lots 42 and 73)—the work of the eminent English Water Colorist, the late HENRY Lioyp. When on exhibition some time ago in Chicago, the **CRITIC,”’ of that city, remarked of this collection of this distinguished artist’s works : **Mr. Lioyp has on view an interesting collection of water colors, comprising landscape studies in most counties of England. They are done with the greatest care, and bear the evidence of being studies from nature direct. The artist, too, has shown excellent taste in the choice of sub- jects, and a loving sympathy with the characteristic features of English country landscape that give these sketches and studies a peculiar value. There is, too, a charm in the man- ner in which they are worked, quite in keeping with the objects. It is the conventional, unmistakable ‘English’ way of working on water color, but redeemed by its undoubted fidelity to and sympathy with the lovely land it reproduces. One can almost scent the hedges and feel the cool mist blow- ing in his face across the velvety hills, clad in supernal green, as he looks at these pretty scenes among the hills and dales of old England, while there is something touching and ap- pealing in the simple earnestness and honesty with which they are done. It seems a pity that a collection so compre- hensive in its depicture of English scenery cannot be kept together. It would not be a bad addition to the art museum.”’ 1 ‘‘Croxden Abbey, Staffordshire. ” 2 ‘Shaded Pool, river Lynn, Devonshire.’ 3 ‘‘Wyndmondham Church, Norfolk.” ‘‘Near Lynnmouth, Devonshire.” “The Hayfield.” wn 6 ‘‘The Bridge, river Lynn, Devonshire. 7 “Looking up the'river Lynn.” 8 “Castle Hill, Reigate, Surrey.” g ‘‘ Dover Castle, on the British Channel.” 10 ‘Venice, the Grand Canal.” 11 ‘‘Brockham, Surrey.” 12 ‘Paddington, Surrey.” 13 ‘‘Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.” 14 ‘‘Scotch Fisherwomen. ” 15 ‘‘Warwick.” 16 ‘‘Brockham Church, Surrey.” ‘‘The Firs on Sheer Common, Surrey.” 18 Eg 20 21 22 23 24 a 26 27 28 29) 30 ‘A Wild Spot in Devonshire.” “The Towing Path, Regent’s Canal, London,” and ‘‘Haddon Hall, Derbyshire,” a pair, in Sepia. 2 pieces “The Tomb of Bishop.Abbott.” ‘‘Hastings, Surrey.” “Guildford Castle, Surrey.” Framed in oak. ‘The Shore at Bristol Channel.” ‘In Peaslake Lane, Surrey.” “Sevenoaks Church, Kent.” ‘Jacob with the Kid.” Note.—Fine old minia- ture. ‘*Arundel, Sussex.” “The Elm.” ‘‘Ruins of Canterbury, Kent.” ‘‘Betchworth Parish Church, Surrey.” ‘‘A Baronial Hall, Norfolk.” Rare old specimen in black and white and in silvered frame. “‘Wondham’ Mills, Norfolk.” Framed in oak. 33 ‘‘Reigate Heath, Surrey.” Oak frame. 34 ‘‘A Dark Corner, Devonshire.” 35 ‘Saint Hilliers, Jersey, Channel Isles.” Note.— Finely framed in oak. 36 ‘‘Ashford, Derbyshire.” Oak frame 37 ‘‘Near Guildford, Surrey.” Oak frame. 38 ‘‘Looking over the Weald of Kent.” 39 ‘‘An English Ploughman.” 40 ‘Seely Church, Kent.” Oak frame. 41 ‘‘Early Morning, Paddington, Surrey,” Framed in oak. 42 ‘‘Hermit Praying.” Fine old example of mezzo- tinto engraving. 43 ‘‘World’s End Inn, on River Nidd, Yorkshire.” 44 ‘Venice, the Grand Canal.” 45 ‘‘Rocks, river Lynn, Devonshire.” 46 ‘“‘Alton Tower Castle, Staffordshire.” Front view. 47 The same, side view.
