The above painting represents a Scottish Landscape in the Highlands, with standing and reclining sheep and lambs, in the foreground ts a Shetland pony. Its one of the very few paintings in which the artist incorporated a pony. The late Mr. James Dougherty in 1875 purchased this painting Jrom Henry Le Roy and Fils of Brussels with thew guar- antee. Michael Angelo offended at the interference of the Caras- nals, quitted Rome without the Pope's knowledge, and Julius, not being able to induce him to return, went himself to Bologna, and demanded an interview. Angelo attended, but instead of knecling and kissing the Pope's toe, as was the custom, he stood sullenly, showing a want of respect, for which the old Cardinal rose and rebuked him; and here the pont of the picture 1s made. The Pope pointing at the Cardinal, sata: ‘‘ Take your seat, sir ; one Angelo 1s worth any number of Cardinals.” Julius knew “ Poeta Nascitur non fit.” This picture was painted to order for the late Mr. Jas.
