Marcius) ; Paris Cupid and the Flowers 5x 7% The last rays of the sun, setting in glowing splendour, illuminate a dark sky and a dark blue sea, and the sails of some little boats in the dis- tance; and the towers and steeples ofa fantistic city stand out black against his crimson orb. In a strange, marshy garden,Cupid has been disport- ing himself. Ww. ayward and cruel child, he finds amusement in breaking the flowers from their stems, in tear- ing their hearts open—and only leaves them to droop and die. At last he has come to the stately and tall lily—the royal flower, the noble flower, the emblem of purity. He would like to break her also, to tarnish her immaculate glory’; to scatter her fair white petals in the mire . but an angel appears in a halo of light, and, with his flaming sword, protects her ; w hilst the little od of love, enraged and mortified, throws down is bow and arrows, trampling, in impotent an- ger, on all the other flowers around hin. 52 SIMONS (P.
