All figures are seated in the intervals of serried scroll of cloud. The detail of vari- ous Buddhist musical instruments are executed with admir- able skill. The shrine is richly ornamented with wrought-out metal work. The polychrome lacquer painting inside of the cabinet and hinged doors is a superb work of Tosa artist de- picting the waterfall of Nochi Mountain; meditating priest and a glimpse of celestial pavilion, the future residence of _all worshipers portrayed on above. The sculptor’s name is only designated by his Kakihan with the date on the small earved tablet on the back ‘‘May day in seventh year of Tenshio ( ).’’ The collector obtained the shrine from Daimio family in Shirakawa, Northern Japan.
