CONDITIONS OF SALE 
 
 All bids to be PER LOT as numbered in the Catalogue. 
 
 The highest bidder to be the buyer. In all cases of disputed bids the 
 lot shall be resold, but the Auctioneer will use his judgment as to the 
 good faith of all claims and his decision shall be final. 
 
 Buyers to give their names and addresses and to make such cash pay- 
 ments on account as may be required, in default of which the lots 
 purchased to be immediately resold. 
 
 Goods bought to be removed at the close of each sale. If not so re- 
 moved they will be at the sole risk of the purchaser, and subject to 
 storage charges, and The Anderson Galleries, Incorporated, will not be 
 responsible if such goods are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed. 
 
 TERMS CASH. If accounts are not paid at the conclusion of each sale, 
 or, in the case of absent buyers, when bills are rendered, this Com- 
 pany reserves the right to recatalogue the goods for immediate sale 
 without notice to the defaulting buyer, and all costs of such resale 
 will be charged to the defaulter. This condition is without prejudice 
 to the rights of the Company to enforce the sale contract and collect 
 the amount due without such resale at its own option. Unsettled ac- 
 counts are subject to interest at the rate of six per cent. per annum. 
 
 All books are sold as catalogued, and are assumed to be in good 
 SECOND-HAND condition. If material defects are found, not mentioned 
 in the catalogue, the lot may be returned. Notice of such defects 
 must be given promptly and the goods returned within ten days from 
 the date of the sale. No exceptions will be made to this rule. Maga- 
 zines and other periodicals, and all miscellaneous books arranged in 
 parcels, are sold as they are, without recourse. 
 
 Autograph Letters, Documents, Manuscripts and Bindings are sold 
 as they are, without recourse. The utmost care is taken to authen- 
 ticate and correctly describe items of this character, but this Company 
 will not be responsible for errors, omissions, or defects of any kind.

HIS interesting collection of books relating to printing, 
 publishing and kindred subjects, comes from the Library 
 
 of the Typothete of the City of New York, and from the 
 Typographic Library and Museum of the American Type 
 Founders Company in Jersey City. The Typothetz of the 
 City of New York for many years maintained a library at their 
 headquarters. The books were not used to any great extent 
 by the members, however, largely because of the absence of 
 an experienced librarian to take care of them. Eventually 
 they were transferred to the Typographic Library in Jersey 
 City and combined with its collection. When the combina- 
 tion was made it was found that there were many duplicates. 
 These are now placed on sale, so that in new homes they may 
 
 bring pleasure and profit to those who secure them.

 In the American ‘Library of the late Wil- 
 liam H. Winters, for*many: years, up to the 
 time of his death, librarian of the New 
 ‘York Law Inétitute, which is to be sola 
 at the Anderson Gallerfes on..March 8 and 
 9, @ little book was discovered which has 
 the distinction: of being the rarest Cali- 
 fornta, item in the world; the first book. 
 printed in San Francisco, and the first 
 and only copy ever to have appeared in the 
 auction room, or even to have been seen 
 by. noted bibliographers and collectors. It 
 is: “Laws "for the Better Government o' 
 California,” the Preservation of Order, an 
 the -Protection‘.of the Rights of the In- 
 habitants,.during the Military Occupation 
 of the Country: by the Forces of the United 
 States. By Authority of R. B. Mason, 
 Colonel] First Drags. and Goverrior. :Print- 
 ed’ in. San: Francisco, at the press of §, 
 Brannan, 1848,” 
 ‘ When the library of Mr. Winters.-was 
 ‘consigned to the Anderson Galleries for 
 sale, it was believed, that there would be 
 many interesting vélumes for the collector 
 pnd. libraries found in it, but such a prize 
 as: this little volume of “Laws” was. un- 
 thought of. With the customary. examina- 
 tion by the cataloguing departmeht of even 
 the“ most unpromising bundles of pam- 
 
 phiets, clippings, etc,, early in the work this 
 little hook wag unearthéd, loosely laid in 
 with a.mgss of excerpts’ from magazines— 
 @ gem among papers of .no commercial 
 value. Immediately it was known that 
 hére/ was a “find” of the most interesting 
 character, the valug of which loomed large 
 both historically ‘and commercially. As the 
 research work in connection with the cata- 
 loguing of this precious piece progressed it 
 became apparént that this was.in all proba- 
 bility the only copy known to date, as Hu- 
 bert’'H. Bancroft, the exhaustive writer on 
 the West, had never seen a copy, and only ree 
 fers to it, having seen a notice of it in The 
 Californian for Sept. 2, 1848. The Jatest 
 bibliopraphy of California imprints, by Wag- 
 mer, does not record it, a mention of such 
 a work being the only intimation that the 
 book existed. -Further it was discovered 
 that the copy was originally owned by 
 Captain Folsom, he who first announced to 
 the Government .the discovery of ‘gold in 
 California, and on the margin of the title- 
 page he has written “Act published in con- 
 sequence of the news of Peace. J. L. 
 Folsom.”
