F. A. CHAPMAN AND MR. A. N. BADE INTRODUCTION HE present sale of early American furniture is my third sale. When I held the first sale, on November 18, 1922, I stated that it was a cabinet maker’s sale, not a dealer’s or a private collector’s sale. On the occasion of the second sale, April 20-21, 1923, I stated that I would no longer sell at retail, but that all my selling would be done in the future by public auction. My second sale was a modest, though suffi- cient success. I am therefore able to hold the third sale now. I have kept my promise not to sell at retail. The present sale represents the fruit of seven months’ work. I am frank in saying that it was quite interesting to go on week-end and other buying trips. Hunting up antique furniture would delight everybody, as long as there is antique furniture still to be found in out-of-the-way places. But after the discovery, the hard work begins, hard work about which I have said enough in my two previous catalogues, but which was compensated for by the appreciation of my clients. I hope that I shall find the same appreciation this time. Only one thing is on my mind. What will happen when these buying trips to the country and out of town become utterly fruitless and when the last piece of American furniture has been picked up at the source by dealers and collectors? Formerly the simple farmer in Connecticut offered me a drink; now he welcomes me witha priced catalogue of the last Mar- golis Sale, and asks prices that do not take any account of the work which I have put into the pieces sold at auction. But soon there will be nothing left in the old homesteads but the priced catalogues. People who always have some funny re- mark to make, will say that the antique American furniture will then have to be made to order. It is very easy to make funny remarks, but I have as yet not found the man, includ- ing myself, who would be able to fake a simple American pine lining of a drawer, with its beautiful and natural aging of a hundred or a hundred and fifty years. | Jacop Marcotis Cabinet Maker Notice: I wish to state that I guarantee every piece to be genuine, as described, and as stated previously, I shall be glad to make necessary minor repairs without charge for my New York customers.
