BF, A. CHAPMAN, MR. A. N. BADE AND MR. E. H. L. THOMPSON FOREWORD _ Doan a long and active life, identified for over half a century ch | the Graphic Arts, the late Mr. G. H. Buek was a patron ci uly of the art of his native country, and many contemporary nerican artists owed assistance and encouragement to him at ‘the outset of their career. Always a collector of American paintings and water colors, he Ww was the means of preserving to the nation “Home, Sweet Home”, his house at Easthampton, Long Island, the former home of the s _ immortal John Howard Payne, song writer, playwright and diplo- at, which he filled with Americana, Colonial furniture and works “of art associated and contemporary with the life of Payne. _ For many years past there hung on the walls of the Aldine Club, New York City, the Buek Collection of American Water ~ Colors, which had been for decades in the making and is perhaps the most representative gathering of its kind to-day. It is now offered at public auction. _ There is a powerful Winslow Homer, a splendid Wyant, one of ‘the few J. Francis Murphy water colors, a Homer Martin, a John La Farge, a fine Hassam, a rare Blum, and a Robinson, an Emil Carlsen, a Dwight Tryon and a Bruce Crane. Thomas Moran is 4 represented by several examples, and there are several charming | _ pieces by Chase, Abbey and Potthast, with an exceptional Ridgway | 4 Knight. y There is an intimate touch about this collection that must be : 4 referred to. Mr. Buek secured whenever possible an autograph letter and a photograph of the artist, and had these duly framed in with the water color, without interfering with the picture. G.
