The artist of the above pictures, James Sharpless, was born in England about 1751 and came to this country in 1794. The only known works which we have of him, and which are unquestionably authentic, ave a collection of small portraits in pastel, and are on a thick gray paper, softly grained and of a wooly texture, the same as he used in all his small portraits. The colored crayons which he used to execute the portraits he manufactured himself. He kept them finely powdered in small glass cups, and he applied them with a camel's har pencil. He usually made a replica of each portrait, which he retained for his own use, and this personal collection came into the possession of a gentleman of Virgixta. Lach one originally had the name of the sub- ject attached, but during the Civil War a descendant of the owner removed them from his home and many of the names were lost.
