You have certainly been a great help to us? alls Wishing you every success, I remain Yours very Sincerepy, Karl Freund, Hsa., 10 East 46th Street, New York City. [PUBLISHED BY PERMISSION | KARL FREUND’S FURNITURE AND OBJETS D’ART N order to clear the way for a forthcoming Spring exhibition of Karl | Freund’s interiors, the furniture and objets d’art which formed the founda- tion of his two recent exhibitions at The Anderson Galleries (April and December, 1923), will be offered at unreserved public sale at the Galleries on February 20, 21, 22 and 23. The sale will be of interest to those who had the opportunity of visiting the exhibitions, and showed their appreciation of the originality of design and the usefulness of the objects displayed. Some of our foremost art critics have expressed themselves about these exhibitions as follows: “Interiors for Florida’ is the theme exploited by Karl Freund in an exhibition now occupying several galleries at Anderson’s, but the consensus of opmion is that these are in- teriors that would look well anywhere. Myr. Freund as a deco- rator has inexhaustible ingenuity and one never gets to the end of the pleasant surprises he arranges in his exhibitions.?— Henry McBride, New York Herald, December 16, 1923 “The second annual exhibition of modern and ‘old art,’ as the announcement calls it, collected by Karl Freund, looks as though it were to be a perennial institution. That would be great good Fortune, —— Ruth Green Harris, New York Times, December 16, 1923 “This is the second of Mr. Freund’s blithe demonstrations of his theory that essential decorative objects of art and em- bellishment can live in harmony together, with no dark suspicion of period or pattern to mar the joy of their union. This is even a better Q.E.D. of the proposition than the former exhi- bition and gives one a sort of debonair reaction, not only because of the intrinsically beautiful furnishings and adornments and their felicitous arrangement, but also because of the escape from the oppression of stereotyped formulas of interior decoration.” —Margaret Breuning, New York Evening Post, December 15, 19238 The Karl Freund Collection comprises, amongst a multitude of charming, raluable and useful creations from his workshops, a number of specially important attractions, such as: An oak panelled library of the Queen Anne Period, from Letchworth, Hertfordshire A Chinese painted paper wainscot of the Eighteenth Century An Italian painted canvas room A high post bed painted by Angelika Kauffmann for Lord Ely A Stuart dining room suite from the Countess of Craven A Gothic tapestry of great importance A pipe organ of the Queen Anne Period, in excellent playing condition and tapestries, embroideries, hangings, screens, paintings, sculptures, porce- lains, glass, clocks, mirrors, ceiling lghts, rugs, lamps, lighting fixtures, mantelpieces, marbles and bronzes,—in short, artistic expressions of many countries and epochs. VERY IMPORTANT EIGHTEENTH CENTURY CHINESE PAPER WAINSCOT Painted in most joyous colors with representations of Chinese life, the most striking subject being a wedding procession and scenes of Chinese outdoor and domestic life, with pavilions, shops and the ever-returning wall. ‘This paper is in an excellent state of preservation, as since its creation about 1760 it has never been used. (A similar set, once owned by Robert Morris, was found in Salem, Mass.) The set is composed of 24 rolls, of which one is incomplete. Considering the great wall space required for the use of the entire set, the latter will be sold in two lots. CHINESE WALL HANGINGS OF THE MING DYNASTY Of emerald-green closely-woven silk, embroidered with a multitude of leather strips in a design of conventionalized clouds and lotus flowers. Composed of four pieces totalling about 31 1/3 yards; 2414 inches wide. EIGHTEENTH CENTURY NORTH ITALIAN PAINTED CANVAS WAINSCOT Composed of 10 large and 8 small panels, each painted with figure vignettes, flower vases and flower medallions in brilliant colors on a rich sapphire-blue ground, covered with ingenuously designed scrolls painted in monochrome. The lower part a eracefully shaped chest of four drawers with handsomely carved and fluted pilasters with original bronze handles, the uppermost hinged as desk. The upper part, a cabinet of unusual design of six deep and seven small drawers and a centre door. The deep drawers painted as gates. ‘The lacquer decoration of Chinese landscapes is enhanced by roofs of mother-of-pearl crowning pavilions. Of subtle interest are the Chinese joiner’s marks on the back of each deep drawer, giving their position in the cabinet. This bureau, apparently made from a sketch taken to China from these shores, has the fascination of Lowestoft porcelain or other ingenuous alloys of Eastern and Western art.
