The products of the Early Glass factories, Tucker china, Dutch pottery, and fine examples of furni- ture by Savery or Duncan Phyfe, have now become so rare that it is almost impossible to procure perfect specimens, except when some collector parts with his treasures. The Colonial Mansions and farmhouses have been scoured by the early collectors and the dealers until now it is practically im- possible to secure any specimens from this source. As yet far too few beautiful pieces or collections of American antiques have found their way into our museums, but the public in general is be- coming so alive to the worth and beauty of our Early Americana that it will demand some of the large space in our museums now oc- cupied by mummies, coats of mail and such, for the display of Amer- ican objects of art. Some of our American-made furniture dates back to 1650; and what is more attractive than the Pine settles, oak chests, and high chests of drawers from our New England coast? Is there anything from England or France more beautiful or graceful than our Savery Lowboys and Highboys, or Duncan Phyfe chairs and tables? The first commercial industry in this country was the making of glass. At Jamestown, Virginia, a factory was started in 1625 for the manufacture of beads for trade with the Indians, and sub- sequently a number of small factories were established, till in 1739 Caspar Wistar made bottles and window glass in commercial quan- tities, and so advertised in the Philadelphia papers. He also made for local farms and villages an original type of household and table glass that cannot be surpassed for charm or color. To Mr. Frederick William Hunter all collectors and lovers of Early American glass owe a debt of gratitude for his work and unselfish interest in leaving behind him the first published book of glass made in the William Henry Stiegel glass factory, Man- heim, Pennsylvania, 1763-1774, also the collection of Stiegel Glass now a permanent exhibit in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City. The glass made in this large factory is of the finest texture. Stiegel used opaque, blue, green, amethyst, and some amber and red, for the coloring of his diverse products. How great was the variety of his output can readily be judged by reading the fol- lowing advertisements recently copied from the Pennsylvania Gazettes of 1771 and 1772. They clear up many disputed items. POSSESSION OF PENNSYLVANIA HIsToRICcAL SOCIETY, PHILADELPHIA Copied from the Pennsylvania Gazette, No. 2218, June 27, 1771 Copied from the Pennsylvania Chronicle Vol. 5, page 87 _STIEGEL GLASS This is to acquaint the public, and my kind customers in par- ticular I have lately been at the Glass Factory at Manheim, in Lancaster County, and contracted with Mr. William Henry Stiegel for a large and complete assortment of his Flint Glass, consisting of quart, pint, and half-pint decanters; pint, half-pint, gill, and half-gill, tumblers ; wine glasses; vinegar glasses; salt-cellars; cream- pots; sugar dishes with covers; jelly glasses; syllabub glasses; proof bottles; etc., ete., to be delivered to me immediately at my house in Market Street, next door to the Indian King, where I sell them as low or lower, and equal in quality with my flint glass imported from England. Any orders shall be punctually complied with, and i quickly forwarded, and will be exactly furnished from the Manu- aectory. Wanted. A Glass-Cutter and Grinder; such a workman by applymg will meet with good encouragement. ALEXANDER BARTRAM. POSSESSION OF PENNSYLVANIA HisToricAL SocreTy, PHILADELPHIA Copied from the Pennsylvama Gazette, No. 2267, June 4, 1772 _STIEGEL GLASS CAULLMAN & FEGAN To be sold, AMERICAN FLINT Guass, greatly improved, and al- lowed by competent judges to be equal to most improved from England, is now to be sold wholesale and retail, at the AMERICAN Fuint Guass store, in Second Street, fifth door above Race Street, by Caullman & Fegan, where they have just opened a large and general assortment of the Manufactory, viz. Double and single flint gallon, three quart, half gallon, and quart decanters with stoppers; sugar loaf ditto; round ditto; single and double fiint tumblers, pint measure, half pint ditto, and gills; tall pint tumblers, pints and half pints; enameled mason wines; twisted mason wines; enameled mason twisted wines; plain ditto, common wines; twisted ditto, enameled ditto; syllabubs, with one handle, ditto with two handles; bubbled buttoned jellies; com- mon acorn ditto; jacony salts, and enameled ditto; double and single cruets, with stoppers; tall, twisted and enameled cruets; enameled three footed creams, common ditto; three footed salts, enameled blue and plain; inks of all sorts; and flower pots; garden pots; proof glasses; lemonade jars; candle-sticks, ornamented; servers, ornamented; common and enameled mustards; vinegar and oil cruets, joined together; and great variety of glasses, too tedious to insert. The public may rest assured, that no other kind of glass will be kept, or sold in said store. From the great experience that the proprietor of this manufactory, Mr. William Henry Stiegel, has of the patriotic spirit of the Gentlemen in Pennsylvania, and the provinces adjacent, he flatters himself that it will meet with suitable encouragement. All orders of patrons sent to the store, shall be accurately forwarded and complied with, at the Manufactory, or at the Store, from time to time. All Store-keepers, Tavern-keepers, and Retailers, will be completely supplied to orders, lower than im- portation price. For several years interest centered in Wistarberg and Stiegel glass, then branched to Sandwich and other New England and New Jersey factories. Sandwich is justly proud of being the first pressed glass factory and originated many wonderful designs in all colors and combinations of colors. I started collecting in the time of Dr. Barber and Mr. Hunter and have assembled a collection of Early American glass which has a reputation of which I am justly proud. In the assembling of this collection I procured many duplicates and many items which made a collection too bulky, and these specimens I offer for sale, together with some Dutch pottery, Historical China, Lustre, Lowestoft, Tucker China, a large assortment of pewter, and several important pieces of early American furniture.
