Mary Stuart and Rizzio MICHEL, GEORGES Paris 71 Born 1763; neglected during his life, but his paint- ings are now sought for by connoisseurs; he is repre- sented in the Louvre and other public galleries. Georges Michel, born in Paris, on Jan. 12, 1763, was one of the most extraordinary characters in the history of art in France; he was a sturdy little man, witty and vain and naturally gifted as an artist; he painted for pure love of painting, disdained all schools and traditions in art, and produced an incredible number of pictures, to which he never signed his name unless requested by a purchaser to do so; because, as he put it, “ No man will ever paint like me; consequently, my pictures require no signature.” Michel was the real founder of the school of naturalism, of which Millet, Rousseau, Diaz, Corot, and their con- temporaries are the accepted apostles; he died on June 7, 1843.
