No HANS HOLBEIN, THE YOUNGER (1497-1543) Hans Holbein, the second son of Hans Holbein the elder, was born at Augsburg probably in the year 1497. He was brought up in the atelier of his father, where he received his train- ing. In 1514 Hans Holbein the Younger left his home town to go to Basle. There he remained and executed a large number of woodcuts as well as paintings, until he left for England in 1526. On his arrival in England, Holbein became the guest of Sir Thomas Moor, at Chelsea, and is said to have remained under-his roof for three years. In 1528 he returned once more to his home town, leaving in 1529 for Basle. In 1531 he returned to England and to the court of Henry VIIIth who named him in 1536 court painter. In 1543 he died in London. No. 45. It is certain that he went with his brother to Basle in 1514. In 1518 he. became a citizen of the town, but all trace of him is lost after 1519.
