The highest bidder to be the buyer and if any dispute arises between two or more bidders, the lot so in dispute shall be immediately put up again and re-sold. 2. The works of this artist are now rare and seldom met with, and this little gem shows the charming character of his art. He was self taught by study from nature in the Bavarian Alps, the Tyrol, and Northern Italy, and became one of the most dis- tinguished landscape painters of the Munich School. 14 113. It is exquisite in color, refined in drawing, and the expression of the face and poise of the head show rare artistic skill. Purchased by Prof. Peck last year from Messrs. M. Knoedler & Co.. A valley through which a stream is flowing. To the left rises a picturesque Castle and on the right are seen the snow clad Alps, forming a beautiful composition. 122. PROCACCINI, CESARE GUILO Deceased. Born, 1548; Died, 1626. HOLY FAMILY. This large and important work was very highly prized by its late owner, who purchased it at the sale of the gallery of the Duke of Valencia, a famous collector of works of the old masters, and it is without doubt a genuine example of the artist, and of great value, suggesting the work of Correggio. Itis in a re- markably good state of preservation, and presents an oppor- tunity to secure an authentic picture of this character seldom offered in this country. 17 — pate SE BLA othe By the side of a stream a shepherd-boy is tending a flock of sheep, 123 JACQUE, CHARLES EMILE PARIS. First President of the Society of Animal Painters. Medals, 1851, 1861, 1863, 1867. Cross of the Legion of Honor, 1867. Hors concours. LANDSCAPE AND SHEEP. which form the feature of the picture. It is a large and important work, measuring about 26 x 38 inches and very attractive in subject. Jacque ranks as the foremost sheep painter living and this is one of his best canvases, which must greatly increase in value, as the artist being very old, has practically given up painting. In the recent sale, by auction, of the celebrated Seney Collection in New York, a Jacque 74% X12 inches brought $830.00; another 7% x 10, $1100.00 and one 16 x 20, $1125.00. 124. BRUGNER, C. MUNICH. IN THE HARTZ MOUNTAINS. One of the strongest landscapes in the collection, possessing many excellent artistic qualities. 125. Deceased. VOLTZ, FRIEDERICH. Born, 1817; Died, 1866. Pupil of his father. LANDSCAPE AND CATTLE. A very important example of this great master. The subject, a herd of cattle drinking at a quiet stream, over whichis throwna 18 rustic bridge. In the background a forest disclosing a castle in the distance. It is unusually attractive in subject—superb in execution. The works of Voltz rarely come into the market and command very high figures. 126. OTTO, H. MUNICH. THE ORPHANS. A picture of wonderful pathetic interest—fine in color—and mas- terly in drawing and composition. Two peasant children have stopped to rest by the wayside. The boy has fallen asleep in the lap of his sister—who looks sadly toward the cemetery in the distance. 127. MURILLO, BARTHOLOME, (after.) Deceased. Born, 1618; Died, 1682. MADONNA AND CHILD. A fine copy of the painting in the Pitti Palace at. Florence. 128. DEHN, G. BERLIN. UHLANS FORAGING IN A COURTYARD. A picturesque old German Courtyard into which two Uhlans have ridden. One has dismounted, and is attempting to pick up a fluttering goose. The architecture is handled with strong ar- tistic power and exceptionally goodincolor. It is a work of great merit. us, 129. The successful treatment of so difficult a subject merits the highest praise, A painting in oil by this artist sold some two years ago at auc- tion in New York for one thousand dollars. 148. Medals 1853, 1864, 1867. Legion of Honor 1868. Diploma to the memory of deceased artists 1878. GOING TO WORK. (Charcoal Drawing.) The figure of a Normandy peasant on his way to the filds. Itisa fine example of the world renowned artist’s work in this medium and a most valuable acquisition. Millet during his whole life, only painted about eighty pictures. After his death his draw- ings and unfinished studies numbering only fifty-six, sold at 26 the Hotel Drouot, for the sum of 321,034 francs.
