FRENCH. t Special interest attaches to the autograph letter of Hortense, as it was written to Jeanne Francoise Julie Adelaide ‘Bernard Récamier, the inti- mate friend of Madame de Staél, courted in vain by Napoleon in 1805, and banished from Paris by him in 1811, on account of her intimacy with Madame de Staél, and other enemies of the Emperor. It is addressed in the autograph of the queen to the recipient at her salon at L’Abbaye-aux-Bois, and mentions her son, Charles Louis Napoleon [Napoleon III]. The letter commences ‘‘ My dear Léonie” [probably a pet-name], “ Even if I do not write, you know I am thinking of you. I know you are in the midst of your friends, and therefore as happy as you.can be. Alone in this snowy and sunless region, I become very sad, and so I fear to sadden you. . . The world forces me to forget myself. . . . Alone I go over too many painful things. With friends like you one is as happy as one can be. Sorrow becomes melancholy, for while not forget- ting it, it becomes more gentle. I miss you. . . . I do not wish to . speak too much of my regrets and isolation. I hope my son will not be away from me much longer. He loves our solitude, and writes that he will be glad to return to it. I painted a picture, which you will receive one of these days. I can do no better for the time being because of my poor eyes. I wanted to prove to you that I am thinking of you, and hope that you will never doubt my feelings,” ete. The letter, signed, of Napoleon III. is on military affairs, granting a -reprieve to drum-major Dubois. It is signed as “'President of the Re- public.” The letter, signed, of Louis Bonaparte, is a personal letter to M. Larrey, chief surgeon, regarding the advancement of the recipient’s cousin. 5.
