BIRCH’S SONS, Auctioneers. On exhibition, Jan. 15th, 16th and 18th. REMARKS. THESE costly paintings (lot t to 107) were collected in England by the late Henry Graves, Esq., head of the firm of Henry Graves & Co., successors to Alderman Boydell, who established the firm in 1750 (publisher of the famous Boydell Shakespeare, at a cost of £150.000), and afterwards Lord Mayor of London. Mr. Graves had unexceptional opportunities for gathering these gems, as he was the founder of the “Illustrated London News,” in conjunction with the present Sir William Ingram ; and he also owned at one time the Hay-Market Theatre, and a large vested interest in two other theatres. This brought him in contact with the great actors, noted artists and authors of his day, who, one and all, constantly strived to oblige the man who was ther friend in need, by hunting up the rarest portraits for him, as well as other noted works of the great English painters. Many of these portraits were for a long time loaned to, and exhibited at, Shakespeare’s Home, Stratford-upon-Avon; and some he bequeathed to the Shakespeare Memorial. The others were withdrawn for disposition according to his will, and are to be found in this collection. By the conditions of Mr. Graves’ will, the paintings were left for division among members of his family. On account of the difficulty of apportioning the same, and the necessity of making a settlement before March Ist, 1897, it was decided to sell them and equally divide the proceeds among the legatees. It was deemed prudent not to sell them in England, as by doing so it might prejudice the business of the present firm of Henry Graves & Co, Limited, who are the executors of the estate. Some few of the original collection have been sold to gentlemen in the United States, and now the balance are placed unreservedly before the American public, trusting to their gener- osity and appreciation of the highest grade of art in portrait painting by the old masters and early English artists. These paintings have not been “faked” up for a sale, but are in the original condition that Mr, Graves obtained them. The few frames that are on the pictures are of a curious char- acter, exhibiting some fine specimens of old woodcarving. STAN. V. HENKELS. No. 771. He was introduced to Sir Thomas Lawrence, who gave him some of his pictures to engrave. The study of pictures by Sir W. Beechey, Sir T. Lawrence, Owen and Davis, kindled in Clint a natural desire to excel in oil painting, and he was fortu- nate in meeting friendly encouragement and advice from that excellent and truly English artist, Sir William Beechey. In por- trait painting Clint was eminently successful. Mr. Clint, from his earliest time, was thoroughly a gentleman in his feelings. The highest sentiments of honor and integrity were cherished by him almost to a Quixotic degree. He died in May, 1854. ROMNEY, GEORGE 1734-1802 2 ADMIRAL HON. KEITH STEWART. In 1765 he again obtained the second premium for an historic painting. He was, however, more employed in painting portraits than historical subjects, and his work was esteemed inferior to those of few artists of his time. He visited Italy and returned to London in 1775, and became one of the most employed portrait artists in London, and enjoyed a liberal portion of public favor with Sir Joshua Reynolds and Gainsborough. He died in 1802. SMITH, JOHN RAPHAEL 3 CHARLES JAMES FOX, Celebrated English Orator and Statesman, 1749-1800. At Venice he received great civilities from the nobility, particularly Donati and Gartoni, and painted the portrait of Cardinal Bassadonna. He went to England in 1674, and shortly after had a sitting from Charles II. The prodigious number of his portraits prove the continuance of his reputation. Charles II. sent him to Paris to draw Louis XIV., but the King died during his absence. James II. was equally favorable to him and was sitting for his picture when he received the news that the Prince of Orange was landed. King William distinguished Kneller more by having him paint the beauties of Hampton Court, knighted him in 1692. He died in 1723. Having a taste for art his father placed him under the care of Peter Grebber at Haerlam. where he did not remain more than two years when his master acknowledged that his instructions could no longer be useful to him, and when he was little more than twenty years of age, he had acquired a reputation as a painter of landscape and portraits. On the death of Vandyke, 1640, he went to England, where he painted landscape, and finding that portrait painting was more encouraged he devoted himself entirely to it, and in which he imitated Vandyke, and soon surpassed all his contemporaries. He painted the portraits of William Prince of Orange and Prin- cess Mary, Charles I., Cromwell and many others of the nobility. HOGARTH, WILLIAM 1697-1764 9 BARBARA VILLIERS, Afterwards Duchess of Cleveland. Hogarth was the son of a schoolmaster, born in 1697, in the parish of St. Martin’s Ludgate. Having shown some disposi- tion for drawing, he was bound to an eminent silversmith and plateworker, to learn the branch of engraving. On the expira- tion of his apprenticeship he entered the Academy in St. Mar- tin’s Lane, and studied drawing after the model. We find him soon after engaged in designing and executing plates for the booksellers. In the year 1730, he married the only daughter of Sir James Thornhill. This union was a stolen one, and conse- quently without the approbation of Sir James, who, considering the youth of his daughter, then barely 18, and the slender finances of her husband, as yet an obscure artist, was not easily reconciled to the match. Soon after his marriage he began his celebrated series of “The Harlot’s Progress,” and having some of his pic- tures placed in the way of his father-in-law, he inquired from whence they came, and being told by whom they were painted, he said: “It was very well, the man who can produce such rep- resentations as these, can maintain a wife without a portion.” He soon after, however, became both reconciled and generous to the young people. Hogarth’s works are too well known to re- quire comments. He died on October 26th, 1764, of dropsy in the chest, at his house in Leicester Field. UNKNOWN 10 QUEEN ANNE (Boleyn). Afterwards he devoted himself chiefly to portrait painting. Notwithstanding he had to compete with Heppner, Owen, Jackson, Lawrence and Beechey, he kept pro- gressing in public favor, and if he had not the advantage of court patronage, he seemed to be the selected painter for men of genius and talent. In 1802 he painted by stealth, but with the connivance of Josephine, a portrait of Napoleon, His best re- cord is perhaps an account of what he has produced there, and if it be found that he was chosen by persons distinguished for talent to preserve their likenesses for posterity, it may be con- cluded that he possessed qualities superior to the more fashion- able painters, who owed much of their employment to the favor of a court. 23 REYNOLDS, SIR JOSHUA, P.R.A. 1723-1792 99 DR.
