Eats 7 SAMUEL T. FREEMA . Book Department conducted by Sran. V. HENKE So ee ; Rass? ee oF SAD RIbG fe | i REMARKS HIS forms the eleventh part of the important Collection of En- graved Portraits formed by the Hon. Jas. T. MitTcHeE tt, lately Chief Justice of Pennsylvania, and embraces all those portraits relating to the English Royalty, Officers of the Army and Navy, Statesmen, Lawyers, Authors, Dramatists, Poets, Artists, Doctors and other characters who have obtained eminence in English history. In an artistic sense, the collection is of the utmost importance, as it includes fine specimens in proof state of all the greatest Engravers of England, France, Germany and Italy, in Mezzotinto, Line, Stipple and Etching. Many of them are in proof state, and afford an oppor- tunity for engraving collectors not to be passed over lightly, whilst at the same time they are of intense historical interest from the fact that they include many of the rarest portraits of men who have had a hand in making England the foremost country of Europe, and not a few are of interest, historically, to this country, as being contemporary portraits of the great men who governed England’s American Colonies, and of those who participated in the Battles of the Revolution. An interesting feature of the collection is the long list of elegant and rare portraits of the noted Wellington and Nelson, and unusually large collection of portraits of Shakespeare, and many rare portraits of such statesmen as Pitt, Fox and Wilkes. In fact, we have here the results of nearly fifty years of untiring research of a collector of rare portraits throughout the markets of the whole world, and during this research it is quite natural that he has obtained many portraits that, to-day, are almost unprocurable. An index of many of the rarest and finest specimens has been prepared, according to painters and engravers, accompanies this cata- logue, which will be of great assistance to those interested. STAN.
