In describing this wonderful collection of Madame Yang-shi’s Chinese art treasures, I can think of no language which so aptly expresses my thoughts as this gifted French writer’s happy simile. Madame Yang-shi’s collection is indeed like a basket of choice grapes. Every article in it is so pretty and tempting that no sooner does a person take up one than he is irresistibly drawn to another, until he finds that he has chosen all the articles contained therein, because every one of them appeals to him strongly, and all of them are equally attractive. Seldom has such an opportunity been offered to the art-loving public of this city. In many respects this is a remarkable collection, remarkable for its quality, its variety, and its rarity. It includes some of the finest specimens of Chinese art, covers a wide field, and extends over a period of nearly 3,000 years. In bronze, there are many articles that were used by the ancients in religious worship. In pottery, the productions of the Sung and Ming Dynasties are well represented. In porcelain, fine examples of the Kang Hsi and Yung Chieng periods are particularly abundant. The single-color vases with their brill- iant glazes and exquisite forms seem to have “snatched a grace beyond the rules of art.”’ The famille verte and famille rose wares with their mysterious designs expressed in terms of rich colors show a high degree of excellence. The jades, ivories, and rhinoceros horns are carved with marvellous skill. ‘The lacquers, screens, brocades, and rugs are beautifully wrought, while the enamels with their delicately painted designs are splendid examples of that art which has been described by Sir George Birdwood as the “master art craft of the world.” It is impossible to give an adequate description of the many charming objects that go to make up this wonderful collection. Abler pens than mine will fail to depict “all the subtleties of line, all the brilliant caprices of color’ as practised by the Chinese artist. Suffice it to say that this is a very beautiful collection and that it bespeaks the good taste of the collector. ) Orro FuKuUsHIMA.
