It will be noticed that I have paid special attention to the variously lustred wares and in particular to that we know as silver-resist lustre. This is largely because I am in cordial sym- pathy with the well-known English authority, Mr. J. F. Blacker, when he says: “Amongst the productions in earthen ware and even the fine work in China, it is questionable whether England produced anything much better than the silver resist lustre.” One has only to take into one’s hands one of these silver-resist lustred pitchers, whether made in Leeds or Staffordshire, to ap- preciate the truth of this pronouncement. As examples of pot- tery they leave little to be desired, while their decorative value, which they owe to their shapes and to the admirable patterning of white on silver, is always exceedingly great. I have before this, in detail, described the technical process of the manufacture of silver-resist lustred ware. How the parts to appear in white were painted with a soluble treacle or glycer- ine solution and the whole pitcher covered with the lustre wash. When plunged in water the dissolving of the soluble treacle left the patterning in white reserve and the subsequent firing per- manently fixed the silver ground. Of great interest, by the way, are those pieces which were first decorated, under the glaze, in blue, the surrounding ground being afterwards patterned in silver resist. Other examples of lustred ware to which I may direct atten- tion include those of Sutherland purple and pink lustre, among which are the celebrated figures of the “Seasons,” a complete set of which is held to be of exceeding rarity. Then, too, wiil be found the solid silver and copper lustred Tea Services and Pitchers. A word about the Collection of Toby Pitchers, with which our friends across the Atlantic appear to be noticeably intrigued. These figures, originally modeled- by Whieldon and Ralph Wood, Jr., later on became known as one of the leading outputs of the Staffordshire Potteries. ‘They were first made in the form of a seated “Toby Fillpot,” as he is known to collectors; but later on, figures of John Bull, a Sailor and others, were included and indiscriminately termed “Tobies.” They were made from 1770 onwards. Among my chiefest treasures is the plaque modeled by Ber- nard Palissy, the great French potter of the sixteenth century. Though chiefly known by his “Fish and Reptile” Dishes, Palissy also modeled a number of plaques, generally of Scriptural sub- jects, which are uncomonly scarce. It is one of these that I have included in my collection. A few pieces of Chinese Lowestoft Porcelain, including an exquisite bowl from a French Dower Service, some Bow and Derby porcelain figures, as well as some of Staffordshire ware, help to complete the small collection I venture to offer to the American public. Every lot is on public exhibition one or more days prior to its sale, and the Association will give consideration to the opinion of any trustworthy expert to the effect that any lot has been incor- rectly catalogued and in its judgment may thereafter sell the lot as catalogued or make mention of the opinion of such expert, who thereby will become responsible for such damage as might result were his opinion without foundation. Orders for execution by the Association should be written and given with such plainness as to leave no room for misunderstand- ing. Not only should the lot number be given, but also the title, and bids should be stated to be so much for the lot, and when the lot consists of one or more volumes of books or objects of art, the bid per volume or piece should also be stated. If the one trans- mitting the order is unknown to the Association, a deposit should be sent or reference submitted. Shipping directions should also be given.
