From the famous series of the “History of I boo Alexander the Great” by Charles Lebrun, court painter of King Louis XIV and Director of the Royal manufacture of the Gobelins Ea Acne ev in Paris. The original paintings by Lebrun, which served as car- 4 a at 7 "* This tapestry was expertized and catalogued by Dr. R. Meyer- Riefstahl. i “ ae 85 toons for this series of taestienh are in the on Museum in Paris. The series of the “History of Alexander the Great” was begun a Charles Lebrun before he became Director of the Royal Manufac- ture (1663) and the completion of this set was one of the first works of the new establishment. Eight sets are recorded to have been woven during the lifetime of Louis XIV., all of them, with one exception, woven with gold thread. The majority of these sets are still nowadays in the possession of the French Republic: in the Garde meuble National in Paris and in the castles of Fontainebleau and Compiegne. The seventh series, a little smaller in size, was given in 1682 by Louis XIV to a Danish ambassador. The eighth set, woven in 1685-6 is the only one recorded without gold threads. It was presented by the King to Madamoiselle de Montpensier. The set consists of five large tapestries and several minor pieces. The main scenes are: The battle of the Garnicus, the battle of Arbela (the present one), the defeat of Porus, the family of Darius or the clemency of Alexander (the best known of the set) and the triumph of Alexander. The present tapestry represents the battle of Arbela, the final defeat of the Persian King Darius. It is the same subject as that of the famous antique mosaic, now in the Museum of Naples, repro- ducing a famous Greek painting. ‘The present composition is one of the masterpieces by Lebrun, showing the influence of Rubens tapestry cartoons, combining Flemish broadness of conception with French refinement in the execution. The left side of the composition shows the Macedonian army led by Alexander, mounted on a conspicuous white charger. The attack- ing Macedonians break the ranks of the Persians, an eagle is flying above the head of the youthful king. To the right are Persian war- riors in rich Oriental array, fleeing. In the right upper corner a war elephant, carrying a turret with Persian fighters and a golden chariot on which the Persian king is seated, terrified by the ap- proaching enemy. He holds shield and bow and wears a pointed crown, attributes, with which we see him still today represented on the gold coins which he issued. The tapestry shows a rich harmony of colors, the sonority of hich is accentuated by deep red, brownish and purple shades. The fig- 86 | y Sie Bs ae ie Ma i) VW Fy ial i; p> a KG “4 4 ¥ i = y ~ a LEER AOL RD DN AIT GE BASE ELE, =e & TAIL OF GOBELIN TAPESTRY = et 4 cect as ea ieee a At te NO i it te = eee acai : ? q : ES ; r, aa ee7 i. ee __ures and the sky are practically entirely woven in silk. The tapestry. | es shows the technique of Bie Noha ss at its best. There is no gold __ thread employed. _ The border of the tapestry is Peters missing. It was dec- es orated with female caryatides and the inscription: “Digna virtus a : imperio orbis.”” “Virtue deserves to dominate the world.” __ As no other set of this series is recorded without gold thread, it is more than probable that the present tapestry belongs to set woven ____ in 1685-6 and given by the King to Madamoiselle de Montpensier. haa It is consequently not only one of the great masterpieces of tap- _ estry weaving, it possesses also after all probability a great historic } interest. — A For further details compare: Maurice Fenaille, Etat général des es ae de la Manufacture des Gobelins.
