This ts a very spirited painting, and bears all the charac- teristics of being from the brush of Thos. Birch, the painter of many American Battles and Vessels. FRANZ HALS. A; 1637.” IL have atiributed this to the Dutch portrait painter, Kranz Hals, who was born in 1584. The painting bears on the back an initial H. Very stmtlar to that entployed by the great artist in signing hts pictures. All I know of the painting ts that tt has been in the possession of the family of the present owner for nearly 200 years, and whatever marks or monograms may appear on the portrait, have not been added during that pertod.
