Went to London in 1729 to study under Thomas Wright. Some years after he went to study in Italy. Whilst there he met Vernet, who at that time was located in Rome, who was so struck by a landscape by Wilson that he exchanged for it one of his best pictures. Raphael Mengs also-painted his portrait there in exchange for one of his landscapes. Returned to England in 1755. Exhibited his “ Niobe” in the First Exhibition of the Society of Artists in 1760.
