INTRODUCTION.
. The object of this work is to present with the Directory, a statistical
iew of the Town, with other useful information. It has been under-
lken from a consciousness that such a compilation is much required
oth by citizens and strangers; affording the former a manual of conve¬
nient reference, and to the latter a ready guide to the localities and in-
titutions of this flourishing Town.
It has been the design of the Publisher, to give in this little rolume,
he most important details that occurred to his mind, as likely to be the
nost useful, and affording answers to the most frequent subjects of in-
|uiry. Some omissions of important information must of course be ex¬
pected in a first attempt of this kind; but as it is intended to continue
.his work annually, such improvements can be made in future editions
as public convenience may suggest. Great care and laborious research
have been used in collecting and preparing the materials in this work,
so that its general accuracy may be depended ori.
The Publisher will be thankful to receive from persons familiar with
he Town and its localities such information and corrections as a perusal
' this manual may suggest, to enable him to improve upon it in future
< Mitious. To those gentlemen wh<r have promptly answered inquiries
<nd afforded aid to this undertaking, by the information furnished, the
Publisher returns his grateful acknowledgment; and, in conclusion sub¬
mits this work to the public, with entire confidence that it will be duly
patronized.
It was the intention of the Publisher to have furnished a Map of the
Town and vicinity, to go with the Directory and Register; but owing
to a disagreement of the parties concerned in preparing the map, he is
obliged to publish the work without it. A map will be obtained,
ht wever, seasonable for the next edition, likewise an Almanac entire,
an... other valuable information not found in the present volume.

SKETCH OF LYM.
- Lynn is one of the oldest towns in Essex County. It was settled in
iG29, and incorporated in 1630. It was-called Saugus till 1637. when
he name was changed to Lynn. It then included Saugus and Lynn-
ield. It is pleasantly, situated on Massachusetts Bay, nine miles from
Boston and five from Salem. The Eastern Railroad, opened in 1S38,
jasses through the town. - There is also a turnpike from Boston to Sa-
em, on which are two bridges, one over Saugus river, 540 feetirilength;
md the other a floating bridge, across a pond, 450 feet. There are nu-
nerous eminences in the town, which afford a great variety of extensive
ind delightful prospects. There are also nine ponds,some of them like
ittle_ lakes, which add their agreeable variety to the scenery. The river
Saugus is on the west, and in the north is an extensive range of high
•ind rocky hills, covered with wood! The town contains 9.375 inliabi-
ants. The principal business is the manufacture of ladies shoes, of
which about 2,500,000 pairs are annually made. The inhabitants of the
astern village called Swampscot, are chiefly engaged in fishing. The
louses are generally characterised by their neatness, and the.people by
.heir industry. The public .buildings are 13 churches, 9 school houses,
in academy, a town house, a post ofUce, and a bank. The houses of
jntertainment are the Lynn Hotel, the Railroad House, the Mineral
Spring' Hotel, the Ocean House, Village Hotel, and the Nahant Hotel,
rwo newspapers are published in the town, the Lynn Record and the.
;Lynn Freeman.
Nahant is a peninsula, on the south of Lynn,, and connected to it by
H beautiful beach of smooth hard sand, sixty rods in width and more
than a mile and a half in length. Nahant is much visited in the sum-
tier season by parties of pleasure, and contains many cottages, the resi¬
dence of gentlemen of fortune and taste. The pure sea breezes, the de¬
lightful prospects of water and land, the numerous beaches, cliffs, coves,
and grottoes interspersed arotind the shores, afford much delight to the
Htfmirers of natural beauty, and render Nahant one of the most delight¬
ful resorts in the country.

The object of this Institution is to afford every industrious person the
great advantage of public security and interest for small sums of money,
and to enable them, without much expense of time or trouble, to obtain
that personal comfort and independence which arise from prudent con¬
duct.
Sums are received by this Institution so low as One Dollar, for the
improvement of which the depositor will be paid 5 per cent, pep annum,
or 2^ per cent, half yearly, payable in April and October.
INSURANCE COMPANIES. H
There will be every fifth year a dividend or payment te each person
hose money shall have remained there during five years, of probablv
ot less than 5 per cent, on the amount, per annum.
The money placed in this Institution may be taken out on the third
Wednesday of every month, if required by the depositors; or they may

This Association is of great importance to the citizens of this town,
being mutual in sustaining the losses by fire, as also in accumulating a
fund whereby a loss can be made up from the interest accruing. No
citizen who owns a house should neglect to avail himself of the advan¬

generally, now take pleasure in announcing that they intend paying par¬
ticular attention to the sale of

Having disposed of the greater part of their OLD STOCK, and replen¬
ished with goods of the latest and most approved styles, purchased re¬
cently at the lowest cash prices, our patrons will find a greater variety
than can be found in any establishment in this vicinity. The prices of
which are fixed on the principle of ' the nimble sixpence being better
than the slow shilling.' Being satisfied from experience that no abate¬
ment from the first price, is decidedly the better course, we have deter¬
